history
Balgestat is mentioned in the list of goods of the Hersfeld Monastery founded by Archbishop Lullus of Mainz († 786) . The place is mentioned in a document for the second time in the Hersfeld tithe list, which was created between 881 and 899, as being in royal possession, with the tithe belonging to the monastery.
For the first time in the possession of the Ottoman royal family appears Balgesteti in 943 when Otto the Great to the abbot on 24 May in a document issued here Hadamar for the monastery of Fulda confirmed immunity and protection. In the royal court Balgstädt also Otto's son and successor was staying in the summer of 975 Otto II. The last time was staying with Henry II. In the fall of 1013 a king in Balgstädt. On December 17, 1032, Emperor Konrad II left the royal court of Balchestat to the diocese of Naumburg .
The ancient Thuringian family of the von Balgstedt family , who had their headquarters here, was first mentioned in 1152. There were two castles in the place. Both castle sites were square with a surrounding moat. The former manor is located in the north of the village at the transition from the Unstrutaue to the terrain slowly rising to the south; the rectangular castle grounds were surrounded by a trench running in the same direction. The von Balgstedt family's moated castle is believed to be here. To the north-west of the estate, between the village and the railway line, there is another irregular, quadrangular castle area, which is surrounded by a narrow moat that is partly still filled with water and which bears the field name Wahl. The shape of the terrain and the name of the field are typical of a tower hill castle , as it has been in large numbers in Central Germany since the 13th century. It is not known whether one of the two castles was built on the site of the former Ottonian royal court. 1,252 men are made of Balgstedt as pin-naumburgische ministerials called. In 1397 one of the castles was broken and demolished by the Thuringian landgraves Friedrich IV the arguable and Wilhelm I the one-eyed . The von Balgstedt, who are said to have committed breaches of the peace and robbery , were expelled.
In 1404 Margrave Friedrich the Arguable is enfeoffed by Bishop Ulrich II of Naumburg with Balgstedt, Wiehe, Memleben, Heßler, Weißenfels, and other places. In 1422, Balgstedt Castle was still in ruins. In 1442 the margraves enfeoffed the lords of Neustadt (near Oechlitz ) with Balgstädt, and in 1563 one of the two noble farms here was sold to the lords of Ebeleben. In 1566 the plague lived in Balgstedt and again in 1626. In 1588, Wolff von Creutzen appears as the lord of the castle . In 1589 the place Balnstedt was written. At that time there were 34 possessed men, including 29 gardeners and five coaches in the village. Wolf von Creutzen was entitled to all dishes in the village and the village hall with the exception of the country road, today's B 176.
In 1616 the von Hessler gentlemen acquired the estate. In 1636 the soldiers of the Swedish general Johan Banér looted . Colonel Hans Friedrich von Heßler († 1667) rebuilt the palace and moved from Burgheßler here. In 1728, the privy councilor of Saxony-Weißenfels, Karl Dietrich Leberecht von Schieck, acquired the estate; in 1744, the heirs sold it to the electoral chief forestry master Hans Ernst von Sperling , who was ennobled in 1767, because he was overindebted. In 1757 there were looting in the Seven Years' War and again in the Napoleonic Wars , in autumn 1813 the emperor himself passed the place when his defeated French army withdrew.
Until 1815, Balgstädt was an official village in the Saxon office of Freyburg . By the resolutions of the Vienna Congress Balgstädt 1815 came to Prussia and in 1816 the district Querfurt in the administrative district of Merseburg of the Province of Saxony assigned to which he belonged until 1944th Due to the land reform of 1945/46, the manor of the von Sperling family was expropriated and divided into 42 new farms.

Attractions
Village church
The village church from 1739 includes a late Romanesque , transverse rectangular choir tower , which was probably preserved from a previous building. In the rectangular nave there are two-storey wooden galleries, in the northeast the former mansion box. Opposite this is a portrait of Georg Rudolf von Heßler (1641–1687) with coats of arms. The wooden pulpit altar dates from the time the nave was built. The basket has a lettering cartouche between Corinthian pilasters with acanthus cheeks , the smaller than life-size carved figures on the side show Moses and John the Baptist and date from the 17th century.
