About this picture

Wethau is a municipality in the Burgenlandkreis in Saxony-Anhalt (Germany). It consists of the districts of Gieckau , Pohlitz, Schmerdorf and Wethau. The municipality, which was newly formed in 2010 as part of the municipal reform , belongs to the Wethautal association.

geography

The municipality of Wethau is located in the north of the Wethautal association between the municipalities of Schönburg in the north and Mertendorf in the south. The Wethau stream of the same name flows on the outskirts . The seat of the municipality (Wethau) is about four kilometers southeast of the city of Naumburg (Saale) . In the east joins the unified municipality of the city of Teuchern .

history

The community was first mentioned in a document in 1146.

The place name is derived from the Wethaubach . In 976 the name Weta appears, traced back to the Indo-European word noid, which is to be equated with "to squirm". The oldest documented message comes from the year 1064. The place itself is first mentioned in a document in 1146, when the Naumburg bishop Udo transferred the new fracture tenth in the Pleißengau and Geragau to the monastery Bosau . a. also confirmed by Heidenreich von Wethau. At that time there was a feudal seat in the place (farm yard with a stone tower).

In the 13th century, the Pforte monastery began making extensive acquisitions in Wethau. Between 1310 and 1385 the Pforte monastery exchanged these goods for others. The town suffered greatly from these economic measures taken by the Pforte monastery. A document from 1337 shows that the Naumburg bishop Witticho acquired parts of the village for the Naumburg monastery.

A bridge that belonged to the Naumburg Council is also mentioned at an early stage. During times of war and feuds, the bridge was occupied by citizens of the city. The most important architectural monument for the place is the early classical church from the years 1805-1806. Probably the oldest house in the community is also a monument. It is probably an old brewery. The community of Wethau used to be characterized by milling, agriculture and viticulture. Fishing has also been successful. Later a thriving limestone quarry, whose products were very popular, brought work to the place. Brick factories were also built. The good climate, the protected valley location with good meadows and the nearby water contributed to the fact that Wethau was able to develop into a stately village. The old army and trade route to Naumburg made a significant contribution to the development of the village. Today agriculture no longer plays the role it once did. A number of small and very small businesses, some of which are based in former farms, dominate the village for the most part.

Incorporations

Gieckau was incorporated on January 1, 2010.

politics

mayor

Benjamin Ritter won the election in January 2018. He took office as Mayor on April 1, 2018.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on June 6, 2013 by the Burgenland district.

Blazon : “Square of blue and silver; Field 1: two silver fish by stake, the upper one turned to the left; Field 2: six red tiles (2: 2: 2), the middle ones offset towards the edge of the shield; Field 3: a red bunch of grapes with two leaves, a stem and a tendril; Field 4: a silver three-mountain, above a six-pointed silver star. "

The coat of arms designed by the municipal heraldist Jörg Mantzsch assigns a shield field with local symbolism to each district of the municipality according to the principle pars pro toto . Wethau = fish (location on the Wethau river, fishing); Gieckau = six bricks (place formerly had six brick factories), Pohlitz = grapes (viticulture), Schmerdorf = three mountain and rising star (located within mountains).

The colors of the church are blue and white.

flag

The municipality's flag is blue-white-blue striped (horizontal shape: stripes 1: 4: 1, running horizontally, lengthways shape: stripes 1: 3: 1, running vertically) and is centered with the municipality's coat of arms.

Buildings

Noteworthy is the village church of Wethau from the beginning of the 19th century, which clearly towers over the place on a hill . The courtyard gate at the Friedensstraße 20 building is also considered a cultural monument . The gate, built in 1667 and renovated in 1791, is decorated with inscriptions and figural reliefs.

Economy and Infrastructure

Wethau is crossed by the federal highways 87 and 180 and thus literally cut up. Although this fact has a positive effect on the region's economic development, it has a very negative impact on the quality of life in this area. A bypass road is being considered.

Wethau was a stop on the Naumburg – Teuchern railway line ( Burgenland Railway ), which connected the large medium-sized centers of Naumburg and Zeitz every two hours.
