Mariano Osorio

Mariano Osorio (* 1777 in Seville , Spain , † 1819 in Havana , Cuba ) was Spanish general and governor of Chile from 1814 to 1815.

Life

His military career began during the Spanish War of Independence from 1808 to 1812 as a general of the artillery and as a professor of mathematics at the military school.

In 1812 he moved to Peru . In the Battle of Rancagua in 1814 he was able to beat the troops of the independence fighters around Bernardo O'Higgins and José Miguel Carrera . In the same year he was installed as governor of Chile.

In Chile, the time of the Reconquista came , in which Spanish rule was to be restored. He tried to restore law and order and use military measures to prevent attacks by the insurgents.

In 1816 he returned to Lima and Casimiro Marcó del Pont became the new governor of Chile. When the Spaniards lost the Battle of Chacabuco , he returned to Chile. Here he achieved his last victory in the battle of Cancha Rayada on March 18, 1818. Here was Bernardo O'Higgins injured arm.

He lost the Battle of Maipu , and this practically meant the end of Spanish rule in most of Chile, except on the island of Chiloé and in the city of Valdivia .

Osorio retired to Cuba , where he died in 1819.
