Francisco de Álava y Nureña

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Francisco de Álava y Nureña ( also in different spellings: Nurueña and Norueña ) (* around 1550 ) was a Spanish officer who temporarily served as governor of Chile .

Álava's exact date of birth is not known. Diego Barros Arana writes in his Historia General de Chile that he was around seventy years old when he assumed the office of governor.

Francisco de Álava came to Chile in 1603 as captain of a squadron of auxiliary troops and does not seem to have distinguished himself particularly well in the war. In 1621 his brother-in-law, Pedro Osores de Ulloa, was appointed governor of Chile, and thanks to his patronage, Álava was promoted to maestre del Campo , the governor's military deputy. In 1624 Osores named him on his deathbed as his successor.

His eight-month term in office was uneventful. When the viceroy of Peru heard of Osores' death, he sent his nephew Luis Fernández de Córdoba y Arce to succeed him.
