Juan de la Jaraquemada
Juan de la Jaraquemada (* around 1560 in the Canary Islands , Spain , † after 1612) was a Spanish officer who served temporarily as governor of Chile in 1611/1612 .
Life
Jaraquemada was born in the Canary Islands , joined the Spanish army and made his first experience of war in Lombardy in 1577 under Fernando de Toledo. He later served in Flanders for seven years . He returned to Spain with the rank of infantry captain and raised a company in Jaén , with which he was stationed in the Canary Islands for six years. For four more years he commanded a company on the Spanish mainland before he was ordered as a corregidor to Tabasco in what is now Mexico .
He received further offices in the " New World " and acted as majordomo of the viceroy of Peru , Juan Manuel de Mendoza y Luna , Marqués de Montesclaros , whose protection he enjoyed. With a deed dated November 20, 1610, he was appointed governor of Chile by the viceroy to succeed the late Alonso García Ramón. He sailed from Callao and reached Santiago on January 15, 1611. His brief tenure was marked by fighting during the Arauco War .
At the end of April 1612, Jaraquemada learned that King Philip III. ordered a change of strategy in the Arauco War and wanted to switch to the defensive war tactics that Alonso de Ribera de Pareja had suggested to him. According to royal orders, Ribera was to take over the supreme command and governorship in Chile again. Jaraquemada, who disapproved of the defensive strategy but obeyed orders, handed over the official business to Ribera on his return from Tucumán and then traveled back to Lima.
