José de Rezabal y Ugarte

José de Rezabal y Ugarte (* 1747 in Vitoria-Gasteiz , Basque Country , Spain ; † July 19, 1800 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Spanish judge and colonial administrator who held the interim office of governor in the General Capitanate of Chile .

He was married to Juana Catalina Micheo y Jiménez de Lobatón (from 1787).

Life

Rezabal first made a career as a lawyer in Spain. He studied at the universities of Granada and Valladolid and was rector in Salamanca several times . He then went to South America and worked at the Supreme Court of the Colonial Administration in Chile (the Real Audiencia ) as a judge (Spanish: Oidor ). In addition to the office of judge, his duties included building supervision at the Cathedral of Santiago de Chile and patronage of the Convictorio Carolino and the women's hospital.

In 1781 he was transferred to Lima as a public prosecutor (Spanish: alcalde del crimen ) , where in 1783 he represented the indictment against the leader of the rebellious Indians, Tupac Amaru II , who was ultimately sentenced to death by quartering . He also worked at the Universidad de San Marcos and as a judge at subordinate instances. In 1786 he became the presiding judge of the newly founded Real Audiencia in Cusco , where, among other things, he contributed to the trial after the mining accident in Huancavelica - 200 people died there - and a case against the director for breach of trust.

In 1795 he went back to Santiago as chairman of the Real Audiencia from Chile . In 1796 he served as governor on an interim basis from May 16, after his predecessor Ambrosio O'Higgins had been appointed Viceroy of Peru . On September 18, 1796, he handed over the office to Gabriel de Avilés . Rezabal received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Charles III for his services . and shortly before his death in 1800 he was made an honorary member of the Council of India (Spanish: Consejo de Indias ), the highest body of the South American colonial administration of the Spaniards.

Rezabal is the author of numerous legal writings and brought the first printing press to Chile for his own publications.
