The Thun Castle is a castle above the town of Thun , Canton of Bern , Switzerland .

The huge donjon was built around 1190 by Duke Berthold V von Zähringen . Around 1218 it went to the Counts of Kyburg , who added the top floor to the tower. Since 1375 it was the official seat of Bern and since 1888 it has housed a historical museum . The water well in the courtyard is 31.6 meters deep.

The so-called New Castle was built on the walls of older predecessor buildings east of the donjon in 1429 . This late Gothic building housed the offices and living quarters of the Bernese mayors . The Bernese Oberland Regional Court had its seat here until the end of 2009.

On September 21, 2006, the city council (legislature) decided to buy Thun Castle and a large part of the castle hill from the canton of Bern . At the end of June 2014, the facility was reopened after extensive renovation work . In the New Castle hotel with a restaurant and a conference center have been set up, the Knights' Hall in the tower can be rented for events.
