Old Bümpliz Castle

The Alte Schloss Bümpliz is a castle in Bümpliz , a suburb of Bern , Switzerland .

It goes back to a high Burgundian royal court built as a wooden fortification from the 9th century . This later passed into the possession of various local noble and patrician families, was provided with a moat in the 11th century, converted into a stone round tower in the 13th century and expanded into a castle in the 15th century. In 1742 the new Bümpliz Castle was built next to the so-called Old Castle .

In 1919 the old castle became a non-profit parish hall a. a. converted into a restaurant, library and kindergarten . The city of Bern bought it in 1954 and had it completely renovated from 1979 to 1980. Today the castle houses a restaurant and the Bümpliz local archive and serves as a rehearsal room for the Bern Conservatory .
