The Muri Castle is a castle on the hill in the town of Muri Muri bei Bern in the canton of Bern .

history

The first documented settlement is of Celtic / Roman origin (important archaeological finds 1832). The Villa Mure belonged in the 12th century to rule Geristein , in the 13th century the monastery Interlaken , in the 15th century Carthusian Thornberg and fell in 1528 after the abolition of the monastery at the State Bern . The castle depicted in Albrecht Kauw's watercolor in 1670 had Johann Rudolf von Diesbach built (or rebuilt) around 1658, he was a colonel in France and later governor of Lenzburg and from 1650 acquired large plots of land. In 1695 it was made by Albrechtvon Mülinen and remained in the possession of his descendants until 1758. Then it was sold to the burger and butcher Abraham Heggi due to financial difficulties of the then owner family. His successors had major renovations carried out, which ultimately exceeded their financial resources.

In 1825 the doctor Samuel Lehmann bought the castle and 24 years later the banker Ludwig Emanuel von Wagner bought it . He rebuilt and enlarged the building. In 1892 Wagner's widow inherited the domain of Louise Fanny and the six children of the deceased second daughter. Louise Fanny, who had been the widow of Jakob Rudolf Ludwig von Ernst since 1870, paid off her co-heirs and bequeathed Muri Castle to her children Armand Heinrich Friedrich and Louise Katharina Henriette, who sold her share to her brother. In 1938 the son of the previous owner, the banker Alfred Alexander Ludwig Armand von Ernst, became the owner of the palace, which he bequeathed to his daughter Catherine Stankiewicz von Ernst in 1980 after extensive renovations and alterations to the orangery and palace barn.
