history
The Riggisberg Castle was the ancestral seat of the von Riggisberg family, first mentioned in a document in 1140 under Constantin de Rucasperc. In 1337 the estate changes to the von Diesbach family . In 1381 or 1282 the castle was plundered by Unterwalden and Brienzer . Around 1385 the property went to the von Erlach family and remained in their possession for 414 years. The high castle, which is still preserved today, was built around 1700 under Albrecht von Erlach . In 1799, Karl Albrecht Ferdinand von Erlach sold the estate to Karl Friedrich Steiger . In 1880 the estate was sold to the Mittelländische Armen-Verpflegungsanstalt (now: Schlossgarten Riggisberg Cooperative). In 1939 parts of the castle, the so-called long castle, were demolished and replaced by a new building. In 1970 the attic burned out.
