The Castle Unterseen is a castle from the 17th century in the town of Interlaken in the Swiss canton of Bern .

history

On July 13, 1279, King Rudolf I of Habsburg gave Baron Berchtold III. von Eschenbach-Oberhofen the permission to build a fortress between ( Middle High German : under) the two lakes. After the town of Unterseen became the property of the city of Bern in 1397 , the new fortifications were granted the city charter in 1402 . The neighboring Interlaken Monastery influenced the town's fortunes in the following century. With the Reformation came the Indian rag war between the monastery faithful church people and the Bernese troops. In 1656 the Bernese mayor Hieronymus Stettler had the castle rebuilt using stones from a previous building and the ruins of Unspunnen. In the years 1746–1757 the castle was extensively renovated, stucco ceilings and wall panels were installed.

After the French invasion of Switzerland in 1798 and the fall of the “ Ancien Régime ”, the last mayor of old Bern, Niklaus Friedrich von Steiger , stayed at Unterseen Castle on his way into exile . The painter Franz Niklaus König also lived in the palace between 1805 and 1808 . He was involved in founding the Unspunnen Festival. In 1816, head forester Kasthofer set up a school for alpine and forestry in the castle. In 1850, the State of Bern sold the castle and the surrounding area to the entrepreneurs Weyermann, Seiler and Indermühle, who also acquired the Stedtlimühle in order to establish a wood processing company. As a result, a parquet factory was built on the Schlossmatte. After a fire in 1855, the castle received a new roof structure. In 1857 the new factory building that had not yet been insured was destroyed by a fire. This was the reason for the transformation of the company into an AG in order to obtain new, necessary capital. From 1886 the company traded under the name “Parquet- & Chalet-Fabrik Interlaken AG”, whose activities extended to France.

In 1967 the parish of Unterseen acquired the castle and expanded it into a parish hall. In 1997 the facade was renovated.
