The Bipp Castle is a castle from the 13th century in the town of Oberbipp in the canton of Bern . It was rebuilt several times later and is now privately owned.

history

Bipp Castle is mentioned for the first time in a royal document dated March 9, 968 ("betwa bippo capella burgoni una"). In 1268, Bipp Castle is mentioned in a document as the property of the Counts of Frohburg . At the end of the 13th century it came to the Counts of Neuchâtel-Nidau and in the middle of the 14th century it was owned by the Kyburger . In 1407 the Kyburgers sold the castle to the cities of Bern and Solothurn , which jointly administered the rulership that belonged to it. In 1463, Bern acquired the entire property and used the building as the seat of the Bernese governor . When the French invadedto Switzerland in 1798 the castle was looted and damaged. In 1805, the canton of Bern sold the ruined castle to a private person. At times it was used as a quarry. In 1852, Johann Jakob Stehlin-Hagenbach from Basel (later mayor of Basel) acquired the property. In 1855 the manor house, which is still preserved today, was built in place of the old granary. Since then, the complex has been commonly referred to as Schloss Bipp .

A legend reports that a bailiff from Bipp Castle, who stabbed a fugitive at Freistein near Attiswil , died within a year after a serious illness. Since then, he has come back to the place where he did it on some spring nights.

The castle grounds are privately owned and are not freely accessible.
