Brandis Castle was the ancestral seat of the Barons of Brandis from 1230 . From the castle they administered their property in the upper and middle Emmental during the 13th century . In 1337 the von Brandis were given the castle rights in Bern. In 1455 the family sold the rule to the Lords of Scharnachthal . Thereafter there were several changes of ownership until the castle came into the possession of the city of Bern in 1607 and became a Bernese bailiff .
During the French invasion in 1798, the castle burned to the ground .
