Von Scharnachthal was the name of an Alemannic noble family . The lords of Scharnachthal were a ministerial family and were in the service of the barons of Wädenswil . The family name is derived from the village of Scharnachtal in the municipality of Reichenbach in Kandertal in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland .

history

Individual family members are mentioned in documents from the 13th century. The majority of the family's possessions were in the Bernese Oberland. At the end of the 15th century, the older family branch died out with the death of Hans Wilhelm von Scharnachthal. The younger branch of the family under Kaspar von Scharnachthal was at the same time one of the richest families in Bern . Under Hans Rudolf von Scharnachthal, the family's financial situation deteriorated. Hans Beat von Scharnachthal sold or pledged parts of the family property.

In 1590 the family died out of the male line with the death of Niklaus von Scharnachthal.
