The Castle Holligen is a lock on the Holligenstrasse 44 in Bern .

history

The area around Holligen is mentioned for the first time in 1257 as the property of the Teutonic Order House of Köniz . At that time there is said to have already been a castle in Holligen. The oldest part of today's facility is the Donjon , built around 1500 on behalf of the Bernese mayor Wilhelm von Diesbach .

Further renovations were carried out under Hans Rudolf Tillier (1552–1573), his son-in-law Pauli Wyer (1573–1631), possibly under Johann Jakob Thormann , who had taken over the castle in 1648 from his father-in-law Abraham Wurstemberger , and in the baroque style around 1680 under Johann Rudolf Bucher .

Other owners were Johann Rudolf Bucher junior (1719–1742) and Daniel Fellenberg. His son Johann Jacob Fellenberg managed the estate together with his brother-in-law Gabriel Herport (1742–1764), and in 1764 it finally passed to Herport. He had the donjon rebuilt and laid out an avenue, the trees of which had to be felled in 1992.

The castle came to the von Mutach family through Herport's son-in-law in 1783. Carl Ludwig von Mutach (1794–1807) built a peristyle on the west wing , Abraham Friedrich von Mutach built a wash house and a family crypt from 1816 to 1819, and under his son Arnold Ludwig von Mutach there were further renovations in the 1830s.

Holligen Castle is now owned by the von Werdt family . A comprehensive renovation took place from 1991 to 1994, and since 1995 the donjon has belonged to the Holligen Castle Foundation.
