history
The castle was very likely built by the Kyburgers in the 13th century and served as a bailiff's castle and to protect and control the important Aare crossing and was a customs and stage location for the Aare shipping. 1313 Hartmann and Eberhard von Kiburg received the castle and town of Wangen as a fiefdom from Duke Leopold III. of Austria . In 1406 the Counts of Kyburg sold the place with all fiefdoms to the city of Bern . Bern used the castle as the seat of its bailiffs until the French invasion in 1798. In 1687, the castle was significantly rebuilt by bailiff Beat Fischer and received its current appearance. Today the castle houses the government governor's office .
