Aarberg Castle

The aarberg castle is a castle from the 13th century in the town of Aarberg in the canton of Bern . It is now used as office building and houses the government governorship , the Bankruptcy Office, the KESB and the cantonal police.

history

The exact origins of the castle are not known. At the beginning of the 13th century, Count Ulrich IV founded the town of Aarberg, which served as a bridgehead and traffic point. It can be assumed that a castle or castle-like complex was also built.

From 1358 the Counts of Neuchâtel leased to Bern and the castle was the seat of the Bernese governor until 1880 .

In 1419, like the rest of the city, the building burned down to the ground, which is also mentioned by the chronicler Konrad Justinger . In 1477 there was another fire in the castle.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the canton of Bern built today's office building as the bailiff's seat in the style of a Bernese Renaissance building.

The building received new window arrangements around 1803.
