Konrad Justinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Konrad Justinger (* before 1370 probably in Rottweil ; † 1438 in Zurich ), town clerk and chronicler of Bern .

Life

Justinger probably came from Rottweil and had immigrated to Bern together with his brother Werner in 1390 at the latest. He received civil rights there in 1391 and married Anna Wirz after 1426, with whom he moved to her home town of Zurich in 1432.

Justinger's activity as town clerk from 1384 to 1393 and from 1411 to 1416, as stated in the ADB , is to be seen somewhat modified according to more recent sources:

“J. [Justinger] is only explicitly referred to as Bern's town clerk in a document from 1400, otherwise he appears as a clerk (1406-07 as builder clerk) and notary. His handwriting appears in a number of Bern chancellery books, for example in the Udel Book of 1390, in the Book of Statutes from 1398, in the Book of Liberty from 1431 and in a copy of the Habsburg land register after 1415. Works

In 1388 Justinger copied a text on the calculation of time by the Strasbourg chronicler Jakob Twinger von Königshofen ( Computus novus chirometralis ).

With a subsequent work, Anonyme Stadtchronik or Kleine Berner Chronik , Konrad Justinger recommended himself to the Bern Council as a chronicler for the commission for the Bern Chronicle, for which he is known today:

In 1420 the city council decided, encouraged by the long-time mayor Rudolf Hofmeister,

“That the city of Bern should bring together past and great things, which are really useful and good to know and hear, and read together with the truth, except for old books and chronicles, to prove the truth, and of underwisung age praised lüten, umb daz si and your descendants may know the aforementioned ir stat Berne harkomen and opportunity. "

Justinger, who had recently resigned from his office, received the relevant assignment. According to his own statements, he used “the letters, so in the stat kisten ligent”, that is, the documents of the city archive , to write his work . Text comparisons show that he also included the so-called Chronica de Berno , i.e. the entries in the Bern Minster's year book from the beginning of the 14th century, and the small Narratio conflictus apud Laupen about the Battle of Laupen in 1339, which was also included in the 14th century. Century was written.

Justinger's work, which according to the commission extended to the year 1420 and perhaps only to 1417, is partly unreliable in the chronological information, but is characterized by a lively narrative and a simple but powerful language. The recording of some historical folk songs is particularly valuable .
