Friedrich Karl Eduard von Rodt (born July 22, 1849 in Bern ; † July 12, 1926 Bern) was a Swiss architect and historian .

biography

Eduard von Rodt was born as the son of Karl Eduard von Rodt and Cäcilie Brunner . He completed an apprenticeship with the architect Gottlieb Hebler and as a stonemason in Bern's Münsterbauhütte. From 1869 to 1870 he studied at the Polytechnic School in Stuttgart and then traveled to Germany and Italy. In 1874 he married Anna von Mülinen . From 1872 he worked as an architect in Bern. He joined the architectural office of Paul Adolphe Tièche and August Eggimann. His buildings include the Eidgenössische Waffenfabrik in Bern, the Physikalisches Institut, the Jennerspital in Bern, the old Ziegler Hospital , the wing extensions of the Bern City Library, the Villa Zeerleder-Pigott in Kiesen and various residential buildings, especially in Kirchenfeld, where he comes from the Berne Land Company had acquired building plots.

From 1881 to 1894 he was director of the Historical Museum in Bern, and in 1889 he received an order from the civic council to build a new building on the Kirchenfeld. Eduard von Rodt, together with Adolf Tièche, was the executive architect of the winning project for the new building of the Bern Historical Museum . From 1892 to 1923 he was also a member of the museum's supervisory committee.

From 1876 to 1880 Eduard von Rodt was an officer in the fire corps, then treasurer of the fire insurance . He was a member of the Orphans 'Commission of the Society for Merchants , from 1883 to 1921 a member of the Citizens' Council, from 1890 to 1921 a member of the Burgerspitalkommission , a member of the Art Museum commission and from 1902 to 1906 an expert on the Art Antiquities Commission. From 1915 to 1916 he chaired the Association for the Preservation of Patriotic Art Monuments . From 1924 to 1926 he was a member of the Federal Commission for the Preservation of Monuments.

Eduard von Rodt's estate (drawings, graphic collection, books) is in the Bernisches Historisches Museum.
