Robert von Steiger

Johann Ludwig Robert von Steiger (born January 8, 1856 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ; † June 1, 1941 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) was a Swiss portrait , genre , history and landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Born in Rio de Janeiro, von Steiger, scion of the Bernese patrician family Steiger , one of ten children of the plantation owner and former royal Dutch naval officer Johann Wilhelm von Steiger (1818–1895) and his wife Henriette Maria Friederika Fanny, née Pigott (1825–1878) ), his youth from 1858 in Thun , Switzerland , where his father founded a rifle factory. There he attended the Progymnasium and was apprenticed as a carpenter and site manager from 1870 to 1872. Under the tutors Albert Walch (1816-1882) and Paul Volmar (1832-1906) he attended the art school in Bern from 1874 to 1876. From 1876 to 1887 he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . At the Düsseldorf Academy were Andreas Müller , Hugo Crola , Heinrich Lauenstein , Karl Müller , Peter Janssen the Elder. Ä. , Eduard Gebhardt , Julius Roeting and Wilhelm Sohn his teachers. On October 11, 1882, he married Emilie Johanna Elwin (1858–1948) in Düsseldorf , the daughter of the British Robert Baker Elwin and his German wife Emma , who was a painter. The couple had three children, Hans Georg (1883–1922), Emma Eleonore (* 1886) and Wolfgang Joachim (1889–1948). He interrupted his training in Düsseldorf in 1883/84 to work in Rome and Florence . In 1887/88 he stayed in Munich . In 1890 he lived in his mother-in-law's house in Düsseldorf- Pempelfort , later he went to Bern, where he lived until 1896. He then emigrated to Argentina and lived as a painter and teacher in Buenos Aires.
