Johann Peter Theodor Janssen , known as Peter Janssen the Elder (* December 12, 1844 in Düsseldorf ; † February 19, 1908 there ), was a German history painter from the Düsseldorf School . From 1895 to 1908 he was director of the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

Life

Peter Janssen was the first son of the engraver and co-founder of the Düsseldorf artists' association " Malkasten " Tamme Weyert Theodor Janssen (1816–1894) and his wife Laura (1822–1899), née. Hasenclever, born. He had two brothers, the architect Theodor (1846–1886) and the sculptor Karl (1855–1927).

Janssen entered the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1859 at the age of 14, after spending some time with the animal painter Siegmund Lachenwitz . At the academy he studied with Karl Ferdinand Sohn and Eduard Bendemann . After his training, he traveled through Holland and Belgium in 1864 . In 1865 he worked in Munich and Dresden . In Berlin he worked alongside Emil Hünten .

On September 5, 1873, he married Constanze Gottschalk, a Jew. He had four children with her. The eldest son, Peter (* 1874), was the father of the artist Peter Janssen the Younger . The son Otto became a university professor of philosophy in Münster.

In 1877 Janssen was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, replaced Hermann Wislicenus in an alternating directorate with Hugo Crola and Karl Woermann in 1880 and was appointed director in 1895 after the reintroduction of the one-man directorate. Together with Eduard Gebhardt , who was appointed to the Düsseldorf Academy in 1873, Peter Janssen contributed significantly to the new conception of religious history painting. In 1893 he received a large gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition .

Janssen painted several painting cycles, including one with events from the history of Erfurt , which is now hanging in the ballroom of the town hall there . In the Jan Wellem Hall of Düsseldorf City Hall, you can find the historic monumental painting Walter Dodde and the Bergischen farmers at the Battle of Worringen , completed in 1893 , the smaller replica of which received a "large gold medal" at the first Great Berlin Art Exhibition . Other works of this genre deal with the Battle of Torgau (1760), the Battle of Hohenfriedberg (1745), the Battle of Fehrbellin (1675) and the Battle of Lauffen (1534), which were shown in 1902 in Düsseldorf at the German National Art Exhibition in the Great Hall of the exhibition palace and has been part of Janssen's picture program in the auditorium of the Old University of Marburg since 1903 .

Together with Adolf Schill , Janssen designed the auditorium in the main building of the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the mid-1890s .

Janssen was a member of the Düsseldorf Freemason Lodge To the Three Allies .
