Life

Tamme Weyert Theodor Janssen was the son of the mayor , member of the state parliament of Hanover and farmer Weyert Janssen and Hille Meencken Wolters from Poghausen with a farm in Jübberde, on which he, like his eight siblings, helped out in his childhood. He was encouraged to draw early on by the decoratively painted tiles that decorated the stoves and walls in the rooms in East Friesland and the Ruppin picture sheets that were widespread at the time . Theodor Janssen started school around 1825, received private lessons in drawing and portrait painting as a teenager, and in 1835, after having received lessons in Latin, modern foreign languages and natural sciences, graduated from high school in 1835.

At the turn of the year 1835/36 Theodor Janssen went to the art academy in Düsseldorf , studied religious painting , history painting and drawing after antiquity and in 1837 switched to the engraving class founded by Ernst Carl Thelott , which Joseph von Keller continued. During the course of his studies he gave up his East Frisian first name and signed his works only as Theodor Janssen or with TW Theodor Janssen.

At the academy Janssen made friends with Johann Peter Hasenclever and undertook a six-week journey through Northern Italy to Venice and Switzerland with him and his painter colleague Johann Wilhelm Preyer in the autumn of 1839 . In the late autumn of the same year until March 1840, Theodor Janssen stayed in Munich on a grant , where he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts with Peter von Cornelius .

Around 1843 Theodor Janssen married Laura (1822–1889), the sister of his friend Johann Peter Hasenclever in Remscheid . You chose Düsseldorf as your place of residence. With the German Revolution of 1848/1849 Janssen was one of the co-founders of the artists' association “Malkasten” with his brother-in-law Hasenclever . A friendship with the lyric poet Ferdinand Freiligrath arose from this time, in which since the beginning of the “March Revolution” democratically-minded citizens united in a Düsseldorf vigilante group . Like many Düsseldorf artist colleagues, he was also a member of a Düsseldorf Freemason lodge .

The engraving was the middle of the 19th century nor the continuous reproduction technology to spread the knowledge of paintings, including the works of the Düsseldorf School . Here the art association for the Rhineland and Westphalia often played the role of sponsor and at the same time also a client and distributor of graphics . However, Janssen's re-engravings did not generate enough income to support the family of eight. He and his wife Laura had eight children, six of whom survived, two girls and four boys. Theodor Janssen tried to sell his oil paintings and drawings on trips to the Rhineland and the Netherlands. Between 1852 and 1856 he left Düsseldorf several times to earn money with portraits.

In 1867, Academy Director Eduard Bendemann certified him as a drawing teacher at grammar schools and painting schools. From Easter 1868 onwards, Theodor Janssen was able to teach drawing at the Luisenschule . Until the end of the 1880s he practiced the teaching profession. Increasing blindness forced him to resign and give up painting. Most recently he lived at Kölner Strasse 22 in Düsseldorf.

In 1851 Janssen received two awards for the sheet "The Candidate Jobs in the Exam", published in 1844 by the Düsseldorf book and art dealer Julius Buddeus , based on paintings by Johann Peter Hasenclever in Pictures for the Jobsiade .
