The Kölner Straße is a 2.6 km long north-south traffic artery in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Dusseldorf . It begins in Düsseldorf's Stadtmitte district and ends in Oberbilk . The street was inaugurated on December 15, 1868. From 1933 to 1945 the part of the street north of Worringer Platz was named after Horst Wessel .

Course and street description

The street begins at the intersection with the street Am Wehrhahn as an extension of the Pempelforter Straße. From here it runs south as a two-lane main road to Worringer Platz. This part of Kölner Straße is well known as the center of African hairdressing salons, so-called Rasta shops.

From Worringer Platz the street continues to Oberbilker Markt .

An area begins there, up to the Ellerstrasse intersection, which is considered Oberbilk's main shopping street. The construction of the subway and the associated restrictions have led to a trading down . The sidewalks have now been widened and traffic has been restricted to two lanes. The implementation of the Oberbilk bypass was postponed, which means that road traffic is still tense. Several shops changed hands. In numerous cases, long-established retailers were followed by shops that are more likely to be assigned to the low-price segment.

The construction of the international trade center and the relocation of the Düsseldorf District and Regional Court from the old town to Oberbilker Markt initially did not use the retail and catering location. The neighboring retail park on Erkrather Straße initially triggered further fear of shifting sales. In the meantime, however, the fear of gentrification is also triggering counter-movements that express a need in the low-priced rental segment.

Behind the shopping area, Kölner Straße continues in two lanes and ends at Karl-Geusen-Straße.

The writer Dieter Forte put a literary monument on Kölner Strasse as the “Kö of the workers”. Forte described the street as the central traffic artery and lifeline of the workers' district of Oberbilk, which was dominated by the steel industry in the twenties and thirties of the 20th century.

There are hardly any traces left today of the heavy industry companies and factories located on Kölner Strasse and in its vicinity, which left the site up until the 1970s, sometimes even a few years later. One of the few exceptions is the historicist gate entrance with gatehouse to the former Kahle Rohrleitungsbau GmbH. The health department of the state capital Düsseldorf is now also located in the former administration building of the steelworks.

traffic

In the last few decades, Kölner Strasse has been a main thoroughfare with heavy traffic. This function was to be withdrawn from the planned construction of the Oberbilk bypass . The plans for this have meanwhile been given up.

Since 2018 there have also been cycle lanes in each direction, starting at the intersection with Am Wehrhahn street up to Oberbilker Markt; Smaller remaining gaps in the cycle path network in the course of Kölner Straße, especially at Worringer Platz, are to be closed.

The Kölner Straße is crossed by several tram lines and used by trams and light rail vehicles. The Rheinbahn line 704 runs on Kölner Straße in the Pempelforter Straße – Worringer Platz section. The U74, U77 and U79 tram lines pass under the street in the Oberbilker Markt and Ellerstraße area. The subway stations Oberbilker Markt / Warschauer Straße and Ellerstraße are located with entrances on Kölner Straße. The street is crossed by the tram lines 708, 709, 719 on Worringer Platz and the lines 706, 716 on Oberbilker Markt, and the tram lines U75 and U76 pass under the street in the area of the Handelszentrum / Moskauer Straße underground station . The bus routes 721, 722, 732, 738, 834, NE 2 and NE 4 serve the Worringer Platz stop. Lines 721, 722 and 736 run on Flügelstrasse.
