Strauss Innovation GmbH , based in Langenfeld near Düsseldorf, was a German department store chain . In 2012 the company had 78 branches nationwide, around 40 of them in North Rhine-Westphalia , the company's home.

history

In 1902 the married couple Heinrich and Maria Strauss opened a shop for haberdashery, white and woolen goods in Düsseldorf's old town , which the owners ran themselves. Until 1989, the founding family ran the Strauss company as a family business. At that time, the branch network was still largely limited to North Rhine-Westphalia.

Nationwide expansion from 1992

The company was sold to employee Peter Geringhoff in 1989. After that, the branch network was greatly expanded nationwide. The head office was relocated from Düsseldorf to Langenfeld. In 1992 the first branch was opened in Berlin. In 2002 Strauss celebrated its 100th company anniversary. The year of foundation could also be recognized by the lettering "Strauss 1902" in many branches. At this point in time, branches were opened in northern Germany and in the Frankfurt area, in which Strauss was not previously represented.

At the time of the greatest economic expansion of Strauss Innovation by Peter Geringhoff, the company had over 2,000 employees and achieved a turnover of 280 million euros.

Peter Geringhoff handed the company over to his son Thomas in 2004. In 2005 the company had 2,005 employees and a turnover of 260 million euros. In 2006, the 100th branch was opened in Wolfsburg. As a result of the imitating competition from Aldi and Lidl , who also offered new promotional goods every week, and the large range of goods available at all times from the mail order company Amazon , the company's economic situation gradually deteriorated.

In 2008 the financial investor EQT took over the company. This saved the company from a financial bottleneck, closed 15 branches and cut 430 jobs. On December 9, 2011, EQT announced that it had sold Strauss Innovation to financial investor Sun Capital Partners .

insolvency

On January 30, 2014, the company filed an application to open insolvency proceedings as protective shield proceedings in accordance with Section 270b InsO due to the threat of insolvency . On March 30, 2014, the Düsseldorf District Court opened insolvency proceedings under self-administration for the retail chain. As part of the restructuring concept, 19 of the 96 unprofitable branches were closed and almost 300 of the approximately 1,400 employees made redundant. On August 15, 2014, the creditors 'committee decided to sell to the Mühleck Family Office holding company after the holding company had presented a “convincing concept” to the creditors' committee. On November 4, 2014, the creditors' meeting finally approved the Strauss Innovation GmbH & Co. KG's insolvency plan. The sale to the Mühleck Family Office was finalized on December 12, 2014.

On June 19, 2015 Strauss reported innovation with 77 branches and 1,100 employees at the District Court Dusseldorf for insolvency again insolvency on. The court appointed the Düsseldorf lawyer Horst Piepenburg as the preliminary insolvency administrator .

After the recent bankruptcy, Deutsche Mittelstandsholding took over a large part of the company as a new investor, including 55 branches. Since then, the company has operated as Strauss Innovation GmbH. The logistics previously carried out by Strauss Logistik GmbH were outsourced to the service provider Meyer & Meyer at the beginning of 2016 . The company restructuring company Andreas Pulver was managing director from September 2016.

On September 22nd, 2016, Strauss Innovation filed for bankruptcy again. The responsible local court appointed the Düsseldorf attorney Dirk Andres as preliminary insolvency administrator.
