Hans Christian Paffrath (* 1959 in Dusseldorf ) is a German art dealer for painting of the 19th century and classical modernism.

Hans Paffrath was the eldest of five children of Hans-Georg Paffrath and his wife Helena, born Baroness Åkerhielm (1938–2013), into an art dealer family. After studying art history at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , he took over the Paffrath Gallery in 1987 in the fifth generation. First he was the managing director of the family company, since 2000 he has been the sole shareholder.

As a native of Düsseldorf, Hans Paffrath primarily deals with pictures by painters from the Düsseldorf School of Painting . These include: Andreas Achenbach and Oswald Achenbach , Max Clarenbach , Hugo Mühlig , Johann Wilhelm Preyer and Emilie Preyer . In addition, Hans Paffrath also represents internationally known artists of classical modernism in his gallery, such as Max Liebermann , Lovis Corinth , Emil Nolde , Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Gabriele Münter . The third major inventory of the art trade is determined by works by Scandinavian artists of the 19th century, such as Peder Mönsted and Johan Laurentz Jensen .

Hans Paffrath is a member of numerous museum associations and is on the board of the Volmer Collection Foundation . In 2008 he founded the Paffrath Art Foundation .

In 2004 and 2006, Hans Paffrath discovered paintings that were considered “lost” . In 2004 it was the picture “Hunters in the Dunes”, which was painted by Max Liebermann in 1914 and was considered lost for over 70 years. Hans Paffrath discovered a second painting in 2006. It was a picture that Lovis Corinth had painted in oil in 1911 and is entitled "Roses". This was after the Second World War missing, since it 50 years undetected in the Depot was a Dresden museum.

In 2017, Galerie Paffrath celebrated its 150th anniversary with several exhibitions and book publications, such as the book “The Gallery. 150 Years of Galerie Paffrath ”on the company's history and an interview with Hans Paffrath. The work "Bearded Man (Jacob Becker, called Becker von Worms)" by Wilhelm Schadow formed a special centerpiece of the celebrations . At the same time, Hans Paffrath, together with the Museum Kunstpalast and the Schadow specialist Cordula Grewe, published the catalog raisonné “Wilhelm Schadow. Catalog raisonné of the paintings with a selection of the associated drawings and prints ”.

He has been married to the German tennis player Vanessa Henke since 2017.

Hans Paffrath volunteers for the Catholic Prison Association Düsseldorf eV in Düsseldorf.
