Peder Mørk Mønsted , partly also listed as Peder Mork Mönsted , (born December 10, 1859 in Grenaa , † June 20, 1941 in Fredensborg ) was a Danish landscape painter . In the history of art he is considered to be one of the most famous international landscape painters at the turn of the century.

Artistic career

Peder Mønsted was the son of the wealthy shipbuilder Otto Christian Mønsted and his wife Thora Johanne Petrea Jorgensen in East Jutland. He had an older brother named Niels. As a boy, Peder Mønsted received painting lessons at the Crown Prince Ferdinand drawing school in Aarhus with Andreas Fritz and studied from 1875 to 1878 at the Art Academy in Copenhagen with Julius Exner . Even during his student days, he was influenced by the works of Christen Købke and Pieter Christian Skovgaard, a romantic painter and a major figure in the Golden Age of Danish painting. In 1878 Mønsted left the academy to study with Peder Severin Krøyer . Krøyer is one of the best known Skagen painters , a Danish artist community based in Skagen .

In 1882 Peder Mønsted traveled via Germany to Rome and Capri , where he was impressed by the Mediterranean light, the brightness of the sunlight and the glow of the colors. After a financial bottleneck in Switzerland, he was able to continue his journey to Paris by selling some works . There he worked until 1883 in the studio of William Adolphe Bouguereau , the popular Pompier painter who would later also become the teacher of Henri Matisse . With him, Mønsted learned above all to use the brush more freely, which led to a lighter and livelier character in his works.

When Mønsted was back in Copenhagen, he continued his apprenticeship for a few months in the free study school, which was offered as a course supplement. Through the mediation of Krøyer he got the opportunity to exhibit in the rooms of the Kunstnerforening on November 18th , the first art association in Denmark.

In the following years Mönsted traveled almost continuously: in Italy he visited Rome , Venice , Lake Garda and Ravello , in France Paris and Monaco Monte Carlo . In Switzerland , he stayed in the Engadine several times in winter . He traveled to Algeria in 1889 . Three years later he went to Greece , where in 1892 he was a guest of the Greek royal family for half a year, which he also portrayed . In Egypt he painted the pyramids of Giza . In 1892 he visited the Andalusian city of Cádiz .

Mønsted brought back many motifs from his travels, which he worked out in the studio and offered at major international sales exhibitions. From 1874 he exhibited regularly in Copenhagen, but also in Lübeck and Paris. Even before 1900 he was known in Germany for his atmospheric depictions of landscapes, which he presented at major art exhibitions in Berlin and in the Munich Glass Palace . He had great success with the public in Munich, where he exhibited regularly. Even the more routine work sold well there.

Mønsted committed himself to landscape painting at an early age, and several portraits and genre scenes found their way into his oeuvre. Strongly influenced by his Danish teachers and the tradition of the guldalder artists, he mainly painted the landscapes of his homeland. When he was a student of Bouguereau in Paris in 1882/83, he mainly refined his painting technique. Interestingly, he also knew and occupied himself with French impressionism , but he remained true to the naturalistic style of painting. However, he cannot entirely be assigned to this direction, since on the one hand his works are influenced by a high degree of momentariness, but they never appear unpleasant, so that a slight idealization can be assumed.

Mønsted made his works with the help of drawings and oil sketches in nature. It is very likely that he also used photographs as an aid, as his teachers did. The naturalistic attention to detail speaks in favor of this.

With the rediscovery of Scandinavian painting in the last decades of the 20th century, Peder Mønsted's pictures again moved more into the focus of international collectors' interest. Mønsted's pictures were shown in 1995 at the exhibition "Licht des Nordens" in Frankfurt am Main and Stockholm . His works are scattered in private collections around the world. His works were particularly popular with English and American collectors.

Motif design

Despite the many journeys, Mønsted repeatedly devoted himself to the Danish and Scandinavian landscape, which he mostly depicted completely untouched and deserted. The combination of forest and river landscape was his preferred motif. He often observed the landscapes from the water. The unobstructed view of the surrounding land enabled him to depict spacious and atmospheric compositions.
