Julius Exner
Johann Julius Exner (born November 30, 1825 in Copenhagen ; † November 15, 1910 there ) was a Danish genre painter of national romanticism .
Life
Exner was the son of a Bohemian musician who had lived in Denmark since his youth. At the age of 15 he came to the Royal Danish Academy of Art in his hometown in 1840 , where he was a. a. Student of the painters Johann Ludwig Lund and Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg . In 1844 he exhibited a work for the first time at the famous Charlottenborg "Forårsudstilling" (spring exhibition) in Copenhagen and was then regularly represented there with his works until 1910. During his studies, his travels took him to Dresden and Vienna, Sweden, Switzerland and Italy, and in 1857 also to Paris.
Shaped by his teachers, portraits and historical topics from the history of his country were a major focus in Exner's early works. When he found his own style, Exner almost exclusively focused on Scandinavian folk life. On his tours through Zealand , on the island of Amager, but also through various parts of Sweden, Exner observed people's lives very closely and these impressions of “the country and its people” then became the basis of his works, which were often performed with a fine sense of humor. In 1864 he became a member of the Danish Academy of Art, where he worked as a professor from 1872 to 1898.
