Career

In the club

Cristiano Zanetti started playing football at the age of five. In his youth, like his role model Diego Maradona , he only played in the number 10 position . With the beginning of his professional career in 1993 at AC Florence, Zanetti moved into the central midfield. He made his Serie A debut on May 14, 1995 in the 2-1 away win of Fiorentina at Foggia Calcio . In 1996 he moved to AC Venice and in the following years had to work his way up in Serie A through provincial clubs such as AC Reggiana and Cagliari Calcio . In the summer of 1999, Cristiano Zanetti moved to AS Roma . There he was a regular for the team that won the Italian championship in 2001 under coach Fabio Capello .

For the 2001/02 season Zanetti went to Inter Milan , where he was used regularly until 2006.

In the summer of 2006, Cristiano Zanetti joined the record champions Juventus Turin on a free transfer . Despite the forced relegation of Juve to Serie B because of the involvement in the manipulation scandal , he decided to stay with the club and play in the second division. There he was in the 2006/07 season the top performer of the team that managed the direct return to the top division of Italy under coach Didier Deschamps .

In the course of the 2007/08 season , Zanetti was able to maintain his regular place under the new coach Claudio Ranieri , despite the commitment of high-profile midfielders such as Tiago and Sergio Almirón , and became the linchpin in the structure of the old lady . In 2008/09 , Zanetti only made twelve league appearances due to frequent injuries.

In August 2009, Cristiano Zanetti moved to his youth club, Fiorentina , at the age of 32 , where he received a two-year contract with the option of one more season. The Fiorentina paid a transfer fee of two million euros .

In January 2011, the midfielder moved to league rivals Brescia Calcio . After only a year he left the club.

In the national team

After playing a total of 20 international junior matches for Italy, Cristiano Zanetti made his debut on November 7, 2001 under coach Giovanni Trapattoni in a 1-1 draw in Japan in the Italian national team . In the following years he took part with the Azzurri at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea and the 2004 European Championship in Portugal . Zanetti played his last international match on June 14, 2004, in a 0-0 draw against Denmark , the Italians' first game at the European Championship finals.
