The Serie A 2000/01 was the 69th season in the top Italian football -Spielklasse of Lords.
The Scudetto , the Italian league title, won for the third time in their history, the Roma . The top scorer was Hernán Crespo ( Lazio ) with 26 goals scored. For Lazio, which Crespo had committed to € 56.2 million from AC Parma before the start of the season - the most expensive transfer in Serie A to date - this transfer only paid off to a limited extent. Despite Crespo's goals, they were only third in the end and had to take the detour via qualifying for the UEFA Champions League . The fight against relegation was only decided in the relegation . Hellas Verona prevailed against Reggina Calcio , who had to relegate to Serie B with Vicenza Calcio , SSC Napoli and AS Bari .
Due to differences in the amount of television money and the associated broadcasting rights, the season could not begin until September 30, 2000. The season ended on June 17, 2001.
Season course
The first league leader of the season was Udinese Calcio after a 4-2 opening win over Brescia Calcio . Despite a good start to the season, Udinese lost more and more ground in the course of the season and was one point behind the relegation places at the end of the season. AS Roma sat at the top of the table at an early stage and did not give it up during the season. With the reigning champions and city rivals Lazio Rome and Juventus Turin, the "Roma" had their most stubborn opponents. However, both teams did not get beyond the chase role because of their botched starts. Juventus Turin kept the title race open until the last match day, but had to admit defeat. AS Roma won the third Italian championship after 1942 and 1983.
With second place in the table, record champions Juve secured direct qualification for the UEFA Champions League , while the dethroned champions Lazio Rome had to go into the qualifying round of the Champions League in third with fourth-placed AC Parma.
The two Milanese clubs Inter and Milan , which, as always, were among the championship favorites, finished fifth and sixth, which was disappointing for their claims, despite high investments and thus qualified for the UEFA Cup . Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni was sacked in spring 2001 for unsuccessfulness and replaced by Cesare Maldini . The high expectations of Inter's owner Massimo Moratti were also not met by his team. Marcello Lippi announced his retirement after the first game of the season . His successor Marco Tardelli was also unable to meet the requirements. After a 6-0 home defeat in the city derby against AC Milan, he lost all credit to fans and the board. A few days after the end of the season, Tardelli was relieved of all his duties.
The teams from Atalanta Bergamo and Brescia Calcio with the same number of points landed as the best newcomers in seventh and eighth . Up to six laps to go, Atalanta Bergamo was always in positions that would have meant an international starting position. Brescia, on the other hand, was near the relegation zone for a long time and was able to secure his good place with a strong finish.
The two newly promoted Vicenza Calcio and SSC Napoli descended directly into Serie B in 16th and 17th place respectively. The bottom of the table was AS Bari, who no longer gave up the “red lantern” from the 13th round. US Lecce, Reggina Calcio and Hellas Verona, who each had 37 points in the end, fought a three-way battle for relegation. Lecce managed to stay in the league thanks to the better goal difference, while Verona and Reggina had to play two relegation games to stay relegated. The Veronese had the better end for themselves - after the 1-0 home win and the 1: 2 away defeat - thanks to the away goals rule and managed to stay up. Reggina had to make her way to Serie B with Vizenca, Napoli and Bari.
The highest win of the season was in the Milan city derby. AC Milan won 6-0 against Inter Milan. The highest-scoring games were Hellas Verona’s 5-4 victory over FC Bologna , SSC Napoli’s 6-2 win over Reggina and Lazio’s 5: 3 over Hellas Verona.

Goalscorer table
It was not because of Hernán Crespo that Lazio could not successfully defend their championship title. The Argentine, who was brought in by AC Parma for the record sum of € 56.2 million in the summer of 2000, scored more than a third of all his team's goals and won the title of top scorer with 26 goals. The top scorer of the preseason Andrij Shevchenko finished second with 24 goals. In third place was Enrico Chiesa , who was successful 22 times, the best Italian.
