The Serie A 2001/02 was the 70th season in the top Italian football -Spielklasse of Lords. It started on August 25, 2001. The season ended on May 5, 2002 due to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan. The Scudetto , the Italian championship title, was won by record champions Juventus Turin after a three-year lean period . Hellas Verona , US Lecce , AC Florence and AC Venice had to relegate . The top scorer was shared with 24 goals each by the Italian Dario Hübner from FC Piacenza and the Frenchman David Trezeguet from the champions Juventus Turin.
Season course
As in previous years, the title fight was decided on the last day of the match. Inter Milan, which had been at the top of the table for a long time, lost the championship with a 2-4 defeat at Lazio Rome on the last match day and was overtaken by the new title holder Juventus Turin and the old, reigning champions AS Roma . Under the new coach Carlo Ancelotti , AC Milan secured qualification for the UEFA Champions League on the final day of the match and were eliminated in the UEFA Cup in the semi-finals against Borussia Dortmund . The biggest surprise of the 2001/02 season was promoted AC Chievo Verona , who topped the league table more than six times in the preliminary round in their first season in the top Italian Serie A and reached the UEFA Cup at the end of the season. Lazio, which had to say goodbye to the title fight early after a false start of six games without a win at the start of the season, also never reached fourth place in the table for the entire season, which would have allowed them to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Dino Zoff resigned after the fourth game day. His successor Alberto Zaccheroni could not get Lazio going either and had to vacate his post after a 5-1 defeat at home to city rivals AS Roma. Missing out on the UEFA Champions League had serious consequences for Lazio. President Sergio Cragnotti announced further austerity measures and the sale of important service providers to save the indebted club from bankruptcy.
Brescia Calcio managed to stay in the league on the last day of the match with a home win against FC Bologna , which missed the European Cup. At the end of the season, Udinese Calcio was fourteenth in the table, one point ahead of the relegation ranks. In the lower regions of the table, AC Parma was to be found for a long time, which could not compensate for the departures of top performers such as Sérgio Conceição , Lilian Thuram , Márcio Amoroso and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon . The 1999 UEFA Cup winner, who qualified for the European Cup at the end of the season by reaching the Coppa Italia cup final, wore three coaches .
Of the four promoted players, only AC Venice was relegated , AC Chievo Verona secured participation in the European Cup, Torino Calcio and Piacenza Calcio ended up in the secured midfield. Hellas Verona , which was able to save itself in the relegation last season, slipped to a relegation zone on the last day of the game and had to start the second division with US Lecce , Fiorentina and Venice. For Fiorentina it was the third relegation to Serie B after 1931 and 1993 . Before that, due to the financially strained situation, the season started with a slimmed-down squad that had little in common with the team's recent successes in recent years. Fiorentina spent almost the entire season on a relegation zone, which led coach Roberto Mancini to resign in early January 2002. His successor was sports director Ottavio Bianchi , who could no longer prevent relegation.
Special incidents
Lazios Jaap Stam was tested positive for nandrolone in a doping test in November 2001 and was excluded from the game for an indefinite period by the Italian Football Association . A little later, FIFA announced that Stam would be banned from all competitive matches for a period of five months.
