Márcio Amoroso dos Santos (born July 5, 1974 in Brasília ) is a former Brazilian football player . In the late 1990s, he was considered one of the best strikers in the world. Amoroso , as he is called for short, also has Italian citizenship and therefore did not fall under the quota of foreigners when he was involved in European clubs .

Career

Brazil, Japan and Italy

After his previous positions at his hometown club Guarani FC and the Japanese first division club Verdy Kawasaki ( J. League ), where he was the top scorer in each case, he played in 1996 for the Brazilian club Flamengo Rio de Janeiro , where he played the so-called storm of the century with Sávio , Bebeto and Romario made.

In the same year moved to the Italian Serie A to Udinese Calcio as a strike partner of Oliver Bierhoff . In 1999 he won the Italian goalscorer's trophy and signed, courted by top European clubs such as AC Milan , Inter Milan , AS Roma , Lazio , Fiorentina , Arsenal London , Atlético Madrid and Borussia Dortmund , with the three-time European Cup winner AC Parma . He later had differences with his coaches there and left the club in 2001.

Borussia Dortmund

Amoroso moved from the Italian first division club to Borussia Dortmund 's Bundesliga team in 2001 for a transfer fee of the equivalent of EUR 25.5 million . He was German champion with Borussia Dortmund in the 2001/02 season and top scorer in the Bundesliga in the same year , led the club to the UEFA Cup final (he scored a hat trick in the 4-0 victory in the semi-final first leg against AC Milan ) and returned a little later to the Brazilian national team.

At the beginning of the 2002/03 season Amoroso injured his Achilles tendon and did not return to the squad until the end of October. Dortmund's coach Matthias Sammer only used him sporadically. Amoroso did not play for more than 90 minutes throughout the season, but scored important goals for BVB. Since his performances were at times unsteady and Amoroso's too playful attitude with the ball did not agree with Sammers philosophy of hard work on the court, the differences between the two increased.

At the beginning of the 2003/04 season , Dortmund's board of directors put public pressure on coach Sammer to bet on the Brazilian striker and place him in the team. In the first four Bundesliga games for BVB Amoroso scored four goals until he tore the inner ligament partially on September 11, 2003. Because Amoroso wanted to cure his injury in his home country, there were public disagreements with the club management of Borussia Dortmund. Finally, the goalscorer's contract with the club was terminated on April 1, 2004.

Spain, Brazil, Italy and Greece

He then went to Málaga FC for one season . He then returned to Brazil for São Paulo FC , where he signed a one-year contract valid until June 2006. In 2005 he won the Copa Libertadores with the club , to which he also contributed a goal in the final.

After winning the FIFA Club World Cup in 2005 , he moved to AC Milan in January 2006 , where he replaced Christian Vieri . He couldn't really assert himself in Milan and couldn't get beyond reservist status (four games, one goal). He then moved back to Brazil after six months and signed with Corinthians São Paulo . From May 2007 Amoroso was under contract with the Brazilian Série-A club Gremio Porto Alegre, which was dissolved again in August.

In January 2008 he signed a contract with Aris Thessaloniki . In January 2009 Amoroso moved back to Brazil in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B to Guarani Futebol Clube.
