Antonio Pietro Paolo Virdis (born June 26, 1957 in Sassari ) is a former Italian football player .
In his career he played a. a. for Juventus Turin and AC Milan . Today Virdis works as a TV commentator.
Career
Pietro Paolo Virdis played for Juvenilia in his youth. 1973/74 he made his debut at Nuorese in the Series D . There he played his way into the limelight with eleven goals this season at the age of just 16.
In 1974 Virdis was signed by Cagliari Calcio , where he made his Serie A debut on October 6, 1974 against Lanerossi Vicenza at the age of 17 . In the following season, Virdis could not prevent the relegation of his club despite six goals this season.
In the 1976/77 season Pietro Paolo Virdis made his final breakthrough, he scored 18 goals and was then committed by Juventus Turin in the summer of 1977. At Juve , he was able to win his first championship straight away , but did not earn a real regular place in three seasons. Therefore, he moved back to his Sardinian homeland in 1980 to Cagliari Calcio, a year later he returned to Juventus.
After a strong season in 1981/82 and his second championship with Juve , Virdis moved to Udinese Calcio in 1982 , as his place at Juve was occupied by Paolo Rossi , who returned from his suspension from the 1979 bribery scandal. In Udine he was rarely used in the first season due to numerous injuries, in the second he scored ten goals.
In the summer of 1984 Pietro Paolo Virdis was signed by AC Milan , where he played until 1989 and became one of the best Italian attackers of the time. He had his best season in 1986/87, when he became the top scorer in Serie A with 17 goals. In the following season, Virdis then secured the title with two goals in a 3-2 win in the preliminary game for the championship against SSC Napoli den rossoneri . In 1988/89 he won the European Champion Clubs' Cup with Milan .
In the summer of 1989 Virdis then went to US Lecce , where he ended his active career in 1991 after two seasons.
Pietro Paolo Virdis has not played a single senior international match for Italy in his career and has played seven times for the U-21 national team . He also scored nine goals in 15 games for the Olympic selection, with which he also took part in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and was fourth after a 3-0 defeat against Germany .
