Filippo "Pippo" Inzaghi (born August 9, 1973 in Piacenza ) is a former Italian soccer player and today's soccer coach . Since June 2019 he has been the head coach of the Italian second division club Benevento Calcio .

Player career

In the club

Filippo Inzaghi made his first steps in Italian professional football in the 1991/92 season at his home club FC Piacenza , for which he came to two appearances in Serie B , the second highest Italian division. The following year he scored 13 goals in 21 Serie C1 games (third Italian division) for UC AlbinoLeffe .

After one-year interludes in Verona and Piacenza again, Inzaghi made his debut with AC Parma in Serie A in the 1995/96 season , scoring two goals in 15 games.

Final Inzaghi is established then in the 1996/97 season , when he in his second year in Serie A 24 goals in 33 appearances for Atalanta Bergamo arrive. This made the top clubs in Italy aware of him and he moved to Juventus Turin in 1997 , for which he played four seasons with great success, was Italian champions in 1997/98 and scored a total of 57 goals in 120 Serie A games.

Before the 2001/02 season , Filippo Inzaghi moved to AC Milan for the transfer fee of allegedly around 40 billion lire (the equivalent of over 20 million euros) and for midfielder Cristian Zenoni , with whom he won the UEFA Champions League in 2002/03 and in 2003 / 04 got his second Scudetto .

In the Serie A 2006/07 season he came to 20 games and scored only two goals. The younger striker Alberto Gilardino was often preferred to him in the league and so Inzaghi was often only used as a joker. In the Champions League, however, he led his team with four goals to the final against Liverpool , in which he led Milan to a 2-1 victory with two goals .

On December 4, 2007 Filippo Inzaghi scored his 63rd European Cup goal against Celtic FC , replacing Gerd Müller as the most successful goalscorer in the history of the European Football Cup. In the list of Champions League record scorers , he is currently ninth with 50 goals (as of October 18, 2016). Inzaghi scored 47 Champions League goals for AC Milan, setting a club record.

After he had scored both goals in the Champions League 2-2 against Real Madrid the week before , Inzaghi tore a cruciate ligament and a meniscus damage in his left knee in the game against US Palermo on November 10, 2010 .

Inzaghi ended his career after the 2011/12 season.

In the national team

Inzaghi made his debut for the Italian national team on June 8, 1997 during the Tournoi de France against Brazil .

At the 1998 World Cup he reached the quarter-finals with Italy. Inzaghi played twice and didn't score a goal. In 2000 Inzaghi was vice European champion , he played four games and scored two goals. At the 2002 World Cup , he and his team failed in the round of 16 against hosts South Korea and was only used twice.

At the end of April 2004 the star striker had to undergo a knee operation and was not considered for the 2004 European Championship finals in Portugal due to this injury . In 2006 Inzaghi became world champion . In his only appearance, in the group game against the Czech Republic , he scored the goal for the final score of 2-0.

With a total of 25 goals in 57 international matches, he ranks sixth on Italy's all-time goalscorer list.

Play style

Filippo Inzaghi was generally not considered a great technician, quick sprinter, or physically strong player. The Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff jokingly said of Inzaghi that he actually couldn't play football at all. Inzaghi himself commented on his lack of willingness to run with the words: "There are others to run".

Inzaghi was one of the most successful strikers in Europe. Also in the Italian national team and for his clubs, he was often able to register on the scorers list. He owed this in particular to his style of play:

Inzaghi was a typical penalty area striker who always positioned himself on the edge of the offside and always aimed at the goal. This enabled him, after a good pass from a teammate and a correspondingly coordinated run, to get the ball into the goal in a direct duel with the opposing goalkeeper. However, this game on the sideline also meant that he was sidelined more than any other player in Serie A, which Sir Alex Ferguson commented by saying that Inzaghi was "born offside". Often, however, he was fortunate that his offside position was not recognized, so that he came to a successful conclusion. He also had a keen goal instinct with extraordinary responsiveness, which meant that he was often in the right place at the right moment to get the ball into the goal. He also had high shooting and header accuracy, so that he could hit from difficult angles.

Coaching career

Filippo Inzaghi as coach of AC Milan (2014)

After his contract with AC Milan expired after the 2011/12 season , he became a youth coach in the U-16 area. In 2013 he became the head coach of the first youth team, AC Milan Primavera , which competes in the Campionato Nazionale Primavera specially designed for youth teams .

For the 2014/15 season Inzaghi took over the professional team from the dismissed Clarence Seedorf . After a season and a disappointing tenth place for the club, which meant missing out on the international competition, AC Milan announced the dismissal of Inzaghi on June 16, 2015. His successor was the Serb Siniša Mihajlović , who had previously trained the league rivals Sampdoria Genoa for two seasons .

This was followed by an engagement at FC Venice for two seasons , with which the promotion to Serie B succeeded.

For the season 2018/19 Inzaghi took over the post of Roberto Donadoni at FC Bologna in Serie A . On January 28, 2019, he was dismissed as a coach; his successor was again Siniša Mihajlović.

Since June 2019 he has been the head coach of the Italian second division club Benevento Calcio .
