Antonio Conte (born July 31, 1969 in Lecce ) is a former Italian football player and current coach . From 2014 to 2016 he was the head coach of the Italian national team . He has been the head coach of Inter Milan since June 2019 .

Player career

In the club

Antonio Conte began his career in his hometown with US Lecce , for which he made his Serie A debut on April 6, 1986 at the age of 16 in a 1-1 draw against Pisa Calcio .

In 1991 he moved to Juventus Turin . With Juventus he won a. a. five Italian championships and the Champions League in the 1995/96 season under Marcello Lippi . Conte was a regular player and captain of the team for years. In 2004 he retired from Juventus to become a coach.

National team

Conte made his debut on May 27, 1994 in the 2-0 win against Finland in the Italian national team . He took part with the team at the 1994 World Cup in the USA and the 2000 European Championship in the Netherlands and Belgium .

At the 1994 World Cup , Conte played two games under coach Arrigo Sacchi and had to admit defeat with his team in the final Brazil , who won 3-2 on penalties .

The midfielder finished second with the Azzurri after their 2-1 defeat against France in 2000 . In this tournament he scored a goal with an overhead kick in the group game against Turkey , which was voted goal of the month by the spectators of the sports show .

Conte completed the last of his 20 international matches on June 24, 2000 at the European Championship quarter-finals against Romania .

Beginnings at home

After retiring as an active footballer, Conte worked in the 2005/06 season as Luigi De Canio's assistant coach at AC Siena . In July 2006 he became coach at AC Arezzo in Serie B . The club started the season with six minus points due to the Italian soccer scandal in 2005/06 and only got five points from the first nine games of the season. Conte was released on October 31, 2006. On March 13, 2007, he was hired again as the successor to Maurizio Sarri and just missed relegation with the team. At the end of the season he left the Tuscan club again.

From December 28, 2007 to June 23, 2009 he was the coach of AS Bari . He was despite the rise in 2008/09 in the Serie A released after serving as a candidate for the coaching job at Juventus had been traded, the then Ciro Ferrara took over. The reason for his dismissal were disagreements between Conte and the club management regarding the squad planning for the following season.

September 21, 2009 he was appointed as successor to Angelo Gregucci coach of Atalanta , with four losses in the 2009-10 Serie A had started. In the first five games under Conte, Atalanta remained unbeaten and scored nine points. In the following eight games, there was only one win, one draw and six defeats, which is why Conte resigned on January 7, 2010 after a 2-0 home defeat against SSC Napoli . On May 23, 2010 he succeeded Alberto Malesani as head coach of AC Siena . He signed a two-year contract. With AC Siena he rose as second in the Serie B in the first division.

Juventus Turin

On May 31, 2011 Conte signed a contract with Juventus Turin as the successor to Luigi Delneri . In its first season , his team was unbeaten Italian champions and moved into the final of the Coppa Italia , which they lost to SSC Napoli .

In May 2012, Conte's apartment was searched by the police and an investigation was initiated against him on suspicion of complicity in gambling fraud while at AC Siena . On August 10, 2012, he was suspended for ten months, i.e. until the end of the 2012/13 season , because, as coach of Siena, he had not forwarded attempts to bribe two Serie B games to the association. Conte's assistant coach Angelo Alessio was also sentenced to an eight-month ban. On August 22, 2012, the judgment was upheld by the Federal Court of the Italian Association . On October 5, the court of arbitration of the Italian National Olympic Committee TNAS in Rome ordered a reduction in the suspension for Conte from ten to four months, which ended on December 8, 2012.

In the 2012/13 season , his team successfully defended the championship title. In the Champions League they failed in the quarterfinals at Bayern Munich . After the third championship title in a row, Conte's contract with Juventus was terminated by mutual agreement on July 15, 2014.

Italian national team

On August 14, 2014 Conte became the new head coach of the Italian national team . With the Squadra Azzurra , he qualified ahead of schedule for the 2016 European Football Championship with a 3-1 away win on the penultimate match day against Azerbaijan , in which he and his team were eliminated in the quarter-finals against Germany on penalties. Then he finished his work as national coach.

Chelsea FC

From the 2016/17 season Conte was the head coach of the English first division club Chelsea . In April 2016 he signed a contract that ran until 2019 and replaced Guus Hiddink . In its first season, the team was mathematically determined as English champions three game days before the end of the season. In May 2018, Chelsea won the FA Cup (1-0 against Manchester United). The Champions League qualifiers failed Chelsea Rank 5 this time. Conte's contract was terminated in July 2018.

Inter Milan

For the 2019/20 season , Inter Milan signed Conte to replace Luciano Spalletti, who was dismissed at the end of May 2019 .
