José Mário dos Santos Félix Mourinho (born January 26, 1963 in Setúbal ) is a Portuguese football coach and former player. In his career so far, Mourinho has won all existing club titles, including eight national championships, in four countries, namely Portugal, England, Italy and Spain. He is also the only coach who has managed both the small and the big European triple . His nickname, which he introduced himself and picked up by the media, is The Special One (" The Special One "). Mourinho has been Tottenham Hotspur's head coach since November 20, 2019 .

Career

Childhood and active time

José Mourinho was born in Setúbal as the son of José Manuel Mourinho Félix and Maria Júlia Carrajola dos Santos . His father Félix was a professional footballer, so Mourinho was influenced by this sport since childhood. He supported his father, who later worked as a coach, from a young age by watching matches from upcoming opponents. Mourinho also devoted himself to the active game and was active for a time in the youth team of Belenenses Lisbon before moving to the then second-rate Segunda Divisão for Rio Ave FC in 1980 and in 1981 the club rose to the Primeira Divisão as first in the table of the northern season . During that season his father had coached Rio Ave. In his first first division season he finished with the newly promoted a respectable fifth place. In 1982 he succeeded his father and returned to the professional team at Belenenses, but over time he realized for himself that he especially lacked the physical component to play at the very highest level. He then decided to become a football coach. First, however, Mourinho completed a study of sports science at the Technical University of Lisbon , where he graduated with honors. After graduating, Mourinho attended trainer courses in Great Britain in order to pursue his career aspirations.

As an assistant coach

Portugal

After briefly coaching the youth team of Vitória Setúbal in his hometown, he took the post of assistant coach of CF Estrela Amadora in 1990 , where he worked under Jesualdo Ferreira . After two more years as an assistant coach at AD Ovarense , he met a top international coach for the first time in 1993. Sir Bobby Robson , who had just accepted a position at Sporting Lisbon , needed an assistant coach there who spoke both English and Portuguese and found him in Mourinho. A friendly relationship developed between the two, so that after one and a half years at the Portuguese capital club, Robson also relied on Mourinho as assistant coach at his new club, FC Porto . There Mourinho celebrated his first major successes as an assistant with two championships, a cup win and two Portuguese Supercups .

FC Barcelona

Due to his success at FC Porto, Robson moved to FC Barcelona in the summer of 1996 . Mourinho made the change as well and continued to work under the British. During this time Mourinho also learned Catalan . Although the duo with Barça won both the Spanish Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 1996/97 season , Robson had to give up the coaching post at the end of the season. However, the club showed great interest in keeping Mourinho as an assistant coach.

Thus Mourinho also became assistant coach of Robson's successor, Louis van Gaal . He recognized the talent of the Portuguese and began to promote him. He made sure Mourinho coached the second team so he could find his own style. Van Gaal also gave him control of the first team at times, for example at the Copa Catalunya in 2000, which Mourinho was able to win as the unofficial head coach. The duo was also very successful, winning the championship and the cup twice in the three years together .

As head coach

Beginnings in Portugal

In the summer of 2000 he took up his first position as head coach when he succeeded Jupp Heynckes at Benfica Lisbon after just four weeks at the beginning of the season . After a short time, a new president was elected in the person of Manuel Vilarinho , but he was not convinced by Mourinho as a coach. In December 2000, Mourinho asked the question of loyalty at a propitious moment after a 3-0 win in the neighborhood derby against Sporting. He asked only two months after his engagement as head coach for a contract extension, but the new president refused, so Mourinho resigned on December 5, 2000 after only nine league games. Later, Vilarinho deeply regretted letting Mourinho go, stating, "If I could turn the clock back, I would do exactly the opposite: I would renew his contract."

A short time later, in April 2001, União Leiria became his second station as head coach. He led the small club to 5th place in the SuperLiga until the end of the season , which was the best placement in the club's history. His successes, however, did not go unnoticed in Portugal.

In January 2002, he moved as head coach to FC Porto , where Octávio Machado had recently been released. Although he had not won a title by then, it was noticed that he had not yet lost a league home game. However, the first home defeat followed immediately in February 2002. Then began an extraordinary series of records: Mourinho did not lose a single league home game for nine years, regardless of which club. After finishing the 2001/02 season with Porto in third place, Mourinho promised the championship for the coming year and kept this promise with a record number of 86 points. In addition, he led his team to win the Portuguese Cup and to win the final of the UEFA Cup in 2003 , thereby securing the small European triple and attracting international attention for the first time. The culmination of his still young coaching career followed in the 2003/04 season when, in addition to the championship, after victories over well-known teams such as Manchester United and Olympique Lyon , he won the Champions League by beating AS Monaco in the final . Due to this success, the move to a top European club was considered safe. Mourinho himself was toying with a move to Liverpool .

Chelsea FC

Mourinho during his first engagement as Chelsea manager

However, things turned out differently in summer 2004. Mourinho accepted Roman Abramovich's offer and became the coach of Chelsea FC . On the occasion of his introduction he stated at his first press conference in London :

"Please don't call me arrogant, but I'm European champion and I think I'm a special one."

"Please don't call me arrogant, but I'm a Champions League winner and someone special."

This statement achieved cult status and helped the Portuguese to his nickname, The Special One , which the British tabloid media like to use . Regardless, Mourinho led the Blues in the 2004/05 season with a new record number of points in 50 years for the first time back to the championship and repeated this success in the following season . He also won the English League Cup in 2005 and 2007 and the FA Cup in 2007 . His contract was terminated in September 2007 after frequent disagreements with Abramovich. With six titles in three years, Mourinho went down in club history as the most successful coach. He was succeeded by Avram Grant .

Inter Milan

Mourinho during his time at Inter Milan

With the beginning of the 2008/09 season Mourinho was introduced as the successor to Roberto Mancini at Inter Milan , where he signed a three-year contract. According to his own statements, he earned an annual income of 14 million euros during this time. He also caused a stir by speaking exclusively Italian at his first press conference, stating that he'd learned it in three weeks.

On the fourth matchday of Serie A 2008/09 , Mourinho won with Inter Milan against US Lecce . This was his 100th league home game in a row without defeat.

In his first season in Italy, Mourinho immediately won the championship , but failed in the Champions League already in the round of 16. Also in the 2009/10 season , Mourinho's team was the measure of all things in the league and also won the Coppa Italia . In the Champions League , Inter moved into the final against FC Bayern Munich after victories against FC Chelsea , ZSKA Moscow and a sensational success against the clearly favored FC Barcelona . The Munich team - trained by Mourinho's former supervisor and sponsor, Louis van Gaal - lost 2-0 in the final. Mourinho won the Champions League for the second time and the great European triple for the first time .

real Madrid

After the final, Mourinho nodded after weeks of speculation during an interview on the program ran - Sat.1 Fußball when asked whether he would leave Inter Milan and work at Real Madrid for the 2010/11 season . On 28 May 2010 Real Madrid and Inter Milan Mourinho confirmed changes to the Royal . The official presentation as coach of Real Madrid took place on May 31st. Thanks to his involvement in Madrid, Mourinho became the highest-paid football coach in the world, according to the French specialist magazine France Football .

In his first Clásico as coach of Real Madrid on November 29, 2010, he suffered the highest defeat of his coaching career to date with a 5-0 defeat at Camp Nou .

On April 2, 2011 Real Madrid lost 1-0 at home to Sporting Gijón . This ended Mourinho's streak of 150 league home games without defeat.

In his first year in Madrid to succeed Royal under Mourinho's leadership after eight years the first time the way into the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League . The Portuguese also led the club to their first Copa del Rey triumph in 18 years in the cup final against FC Barcelona . In the championship, the team took second place. Inside the club, Mourinho's first season in Spain was marked by differences of opinion with general manager Jorge Valdano . On May 25, 2011, Real Madrid announced the termination of Valdano's contract. With that, Mourinho took sole leadership in the sporting field and increased his influence at Real Madrid.

In the 2011/12 season , Mourinho led Real Madrid back to the Spanish championship for the first time in three years and broke numerous league and club records as well as personal bests over the course of the season. His team scored more goals and collected more points in one season than any other club in the history of the Primera División. Mourinho also celebrated his 50th win faster than any other coach after 62 games in the Spanish league. In doing so, he improved his personal record of ten wins in a row, which was once set up with FC Porto. Mourinho also broke the league record for the most away wins in a row. At the end of the season, he extended his contract, which originally ran until 2014, by two years until June 2016.

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season , Mourinho won the Supercopa de España final with Real Madrid against FC Barcelona, completing his national trophy collection in Spain after his successes in Portugal, England and Italy. In the Champions League , Real Madrid were eliminated in the semi-finals for the third time in a row. In the league, the team finished second behind arch-rivals FC Barcelona. In the Copa del Rey , Real Madrid moved into the final again, but lost it to city rivals Atlético Madrid . In the course of the season Mourinho had surprisingly demoted club legend Iker Casillas to number two in goal and replaced first by Antonio Adán , later by Diego López . This led to confrontations with players, fans and the media. Before the penultimate matchday, club president Florentino Pérez announced the amicable dissolution of the contract with Mourinho at the end of the season.

Return to Chelsea

For the 2013/14 season Mourinho was coach of Chelsea for the second time . As the successor to Rafael Benítez , he signed a four-year contract valid until June 30, 2017. The UEFA Super Cup was lost 4-5 on penalties against Bayern Munich. For Mourinho it was the second participation in this competition after the game lost with Porto in 2003 - after his two Champions League victories he had left the respective club. In the Champions League , Mourinho was eliminated with Chelsea against Atlético Madrid - as in the previous three years with Real Madrid - in the semi-finals. In the league, he had the best defense of the season with Chelsea and finished third. In the 2014/15 season , Mourinho confidently led the club to win the championship. He also won the League Cup with a 2-0 final win over Tottenham Hotspur .

After Mourinho had extended his contract by two more years until June 2019 before the start of the season, the results of Chelsea FC in the 2015/16 season fell well short of expectations. Although in the group stage of the Champions League, despite a difficult round, even qualifying for the knockout round as group winners, the reigning champions in the league fell into the relegation region; for Mourinho personally it was the first seriously bad season of his career. Due to its great popularity with the fans, the club held on to him for a few months. After nine defeats in 16 games with only 15 points in the 16th place in the table, Mourinho and Chelsea finally split amicably on December 17, 2015. Mourinho, however, contradicted the representation that the separation was by mutual agreement.

Manchester United

For the 2016/17 season , Mourinho took over the Premier League team from Manchester United from the sacked Louis van Gaal . He received a three-year contract dated June 30, 2019 with an option for another season. In his first season he won the national Supercup , the League Cup with Manchester United and, after beating Ajax Amsterdam 2-0 in the final, the UEFA Europa League . The league closed the club in sixth place in the table. Thanks to the Europa League victory, they qualified for the UEFA Champions League . The season 2017/18 closed with Manchester United 19 points behind Manchester City as runner from. In the Champions League, the team was eliminated in the round of 16 against Sevilla FC . In the FA Cup Manchester United lost in the final against Chelsea .

On December 18, 2018, the club separated from Mourinho. At that time, after 17 match days of the 2018/19 season , they were sixth in the table with 26 points, which was their worst start to the season in 28 years. In the Champions League, Manchester United had qualified for the knockout phase behind Juventus Turin . During his time at Manchester, Mourinho's bad relationship with the team and the club management had repeatedly become public.

Tottenham Hotspur

On November 20, 2019, Mourinho succeeded Mauricio Pochettino as the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur . He signed at last year's finalist of the Champions League into an agreement with a term until June 30, 2023. The Spurs were at the beginning of Mourinho taking over after the 12th matchday of the season 2019/20 with 14 points in 14th place. In the league, he still led his team in 6th place and thus secured the team the UEFA Europa League qualification for the next season. In the Champions League they were eliminated in the round of 16 against Rb Leipzig and in the FA Cup also in the round of 16 against Norwich.

Public appearance

Mourinho at the 2012 Globe Soccer Awards

Mourinho is considered one of the most controversial coaches in current football. The reason for this is often massive criticism of referees and officials as well as sometimes borderline behavior towards other players and coaches. Not infrequently he is severely punished by associations.

Mourinho caused a sensation during his time at FC Porto. Porto goalkeeper Vítor Baía and Sporting player Rui Jorge swapped jerseys after a 1-1 draw against his former employer Sporting Lisbon . Mourinho then tore the jersey from his goalkeeper's hand and tore it. In March of the same year he harshly criticized the coach of Celtic Glasgow , Martin O'Neill , for the unattractive and destructive play of his team.

Mourinho made negative headlines in March 2005 when he publicly voiced allegations of bribery against FIFA referee Anders Frisk . According to Mourinho, Barça coach Frank Rijkaard and Frisk had a conversation between FC Chelsea and FC Barcelona during the half-time break of the Champions League round of 16 , in violation of FIFA regulations. He said that conversation led to the red card against Chelsea's Didier Drogba in the second half. Frisk admitted contact with Rijkaard, but stated that he had immediately turned it down. Nevertheless, the Swedish referee received numerous threats after the game, so that he was forced to announce the end of his career. Mourinho was suspended for the next two Champions League games and in the course of this, the UEFA referee representative Volker Roth called it an "enemy of football". According to reports by Spiegel , Mourinho bypassed the suspension imposed on him for both games against Bayern Munich by passing on substitutions to the assistant coach using slips of paper.

Furthermore, were sentenced Mourinho and Chelsea of the English Football Association to pay high fines because it according to the statutes of the association unauthorized Abwerbegespräche with the player Ashley Cole from Arsenal had led. In the course of this affair, Mourinho described the head coach of Arsenal FC, Arsène Wenger , as a "voyeur". He later apologized for the comment.

Mourinho came under renewed criticism in August 2009 after he noted that Inter player Sulley Muntari 's fasting month of Ramadan was not doing well for his physique. He said Ramadan was an inopportune time for footballers and advised Muntari not to continue fasting. This generated sharp criticism from the Muslim community.

In Italy, the Portuguese attracted more attention through disputes with the press and other coaches. He accused the Italian media of “ intellectual prostitution ” because, in his opinion, they did not report objectively. In addition, he said Carlo Ancelotti of AC Milan and Luciano Spalletti of Roma in March 2009 ahead, they would not win a title this season. This phrase, " zero titoli " (Eng .: no titles ), became a household word throughout Italy, as Mourinho pronounced it zeru tituli according to his Portuguese mother tongue . Later, the supporters of Inter Milan chanted the slogan after winning the championship and the equipment supplier Nike printed the slogan on the winning jerseys for the celebrations. On February 22, 2010, he criticized the referee's performance in the match between Inter and Sampdoria Genoa with a handcuff gesture after two Nerazzurri had been sent off in the first half . He was then suspended from the Italian association for three games.

Mourinho received a match suspension and a € 30,000 fine from UEFA in December 2010 after instructing the players Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos to issue a second warning in the final phase of the Champions League group game against Ajax Amsterdam and dated To leave a place to serve the associated suspension in the last and insignificant preliminary round game at AJ Auxerre.

As Real Madrid coach, Mourinho caused a scandal after the 2-0 defeat in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against FC Barcelona by speaking of a conspiracy in which the opponents, UEFA , the referees and the Children's charity UNICEF (shirt sponsor of FC Barcelona) are involved. In particular, the referee Wolfgang Stark assumed partisanship in favor of FC Barcelona. Mourinho was subsequently suspended from UEFA for five games and a fine of € 50,000. After another hearing, the suspension was reduced to three games.

Another incident occurred on August 17, 2011. In the final of the Spanish Supercup against FC Barcelona, there were tumultuous scenes shortly before the end of the game. After Marcelo was expelled from the technical areas of the field after a foul on Cesc Fàbregas , several players from both teams attacked each other. Mourinho also intervened in the dispute, sneaking up on Barcelona's assistant coach Tito Vilanova and trying to pull him by the ear. As Vilanova turned his head away, Mourinho accidentally put a finger in his eye. Thereupon Vilanova reciprocated by giving Mourinho, who had already turned away, a strong push from behind. After the game, Mourinho said he had nothing to hide from Pito Vilanova. Pito is a Spanish slang term that means penis . He was banned from the association for two Supercup games. In July 2012 the ban was lifted again.

In January 2012, after the cup against FC Barcelona, Mourinho lay in wait for the referee in the underground car park of the stadium and said to him: "You are an artist, you must be kidding about those who do their work."

The FA fined Mourinho in May 2014 to £ 10,000 for improper conduct towards referee Mike Dean and £ 8,000 for criticizing referee Chris Foy, both of which came after Chelsea FC lost.

Mourinho was fined £ 25,000 in January 2015 by the English FA for accusing Premier League referees of a "campaign" against Chelsea after a draw with Southampton in December 2014 having started.

After losing to Southampton FC on October 3, 2015, Mourinho accused referee Robert Madley for fear of not having given penalties. In addition, the referees are "afraid to give decisions for Chelsea." For this he received a fine of around 67,500 euros and a game suspension on probation.

The association imposed a further fine of around 56,000 euros and a one-game suspension in October 2015, after Mourinho abused referee Jon Moss at half time in the away game against West Ham United and had to spend the second half in the stands.

As a coach of Manchester United, he was allowed to watch games from the stands, as he insulted referee Mark Clattenburg during the game against Burnley FC at half time in the players tunnel for a missed penalty, after which he followed the second half from the stands. In addition, he received another game suspension. He also had to pay a fine of around 55,000 euros because he had spoken to the referee in advance of a game, which is prohibited in England.

Private life

Mourinho is married and has two children. He is Catholic and speaks fluent Portuguese , Spanish , English , Italian , French and Catalan . Thanks to the prominence he has gained through his success and his extravagant appearances in press conferences, he was able to conclude numerous advertising contracts, including with Samsung , Adidas , American Express and Braun . Mourinho has been an honorary doctor of the Technical University of Lisbon since March 23, 2009 .

According to his own statement, Mourinho was never a supporter of one of the three big clubs in his home country, but keeps his fingers crossed for his home club Vitória Setúbal to this day .

In February 2019, Mourinho was convicted of tax evasion . He received a suspended sentence of one year and a fine of just under two million euros.

On February 12, 2019, Russian broadcaster Russia Today announced that Mourinho would be featured as an expert on summaries of the UEFA Champions League . It is also reported that he will also work as a TV expert for the Qatari broadcaster beIN Sports , where he will receive up to 67,000 euros per game.
