Marcelo , with full name Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior (born May 12, 1988 in Rio de Janeiro ), is a Brazilian football player . He has been under contract with Real Madrid since January 2007 and is mainly used on the left wing .

Career

Fluminense

Marcelo, who came from a humble background and who preferred indoor sport futsal to field soccer in his youth , joined the Fluminense offspring at the age of 13 . Due to financial difficulties - his family could not afford the cost of bus transport to training - he considered hanging up his football boots. With the support of his grandfather Pedro, however, he was able to continue his career. Marcelo made his debut in the championship on November 13, 2005 in a game against Vasco da Gama . From the 2006 season he became a permanent part of the first team and at the end of the season he was selected as the best left full-back in the selection of the year .

After his strong 2006 season, the then 18-year-old moved to Spanish club Real Madrid in January 2007 . In Madrid he was supposed to replace the aging Roberto Carlos . Marcelo made his debut for Real on January 7, 2007 in a league game against Deportivo La Coruña . In total, he made six appearances in the second half of the 2006/07 season , Real Madrid became champions.

After Roberto Carlos' departure in the summer of 2007, Marcelo shared the position of left full-back with the experienced Argentine Gabriel Heinze . Under the German trainer Bernd Schuster , he played 32 competitive games and was particularly convincing with his offensive qualities, while his defensive behavior was often criticized. With his club, he successfully defended the league title this year .

Under Spanish coach Juande Ramos , who replaced Schuster during the 2008/09 season, Marcelo moved to left midfield and scored his first four goals in the dress of the Madrilenians until the end of the championship. In the following year under Manuel Pellegrini , the Brazilian played primarily in the position of the winger and contributed four goals and nine assists in 43 competitive games.

When the Portuguese coach José Mourinho was signed by Real Madrid in the summer of 2010 and he expressed his wish to sign a replacement for Marcelo during the transfer period, the future of the Brazilian at Real seemed uncertain. However, after the transfer of his dream player Maicon failed, Mourinho placed his trust in Marcelo. He developed particularly in defensive terms, but without giving up his frequent fast-paced counterattacks, in which he impresses above all with his speed and technical qualities. Even after Real Madrid signed left-back Fábio Coentrão for the 2011/12 season , Marcelo held his own and won his third league title after 32 league appearances. In addition, at the end of the season he was voted the world's best player in his position for the first time in the FIFA FIFPro World XI . In the following season he played only 19 competitive games due to injury.

Under coach Carlo Ancelotti , Marcelo fought his way back into the regular formation in the 2013/14 season after recovering from injury and won the Spanish Cup for the second time and the UEFA Champions League for the first time . He scored the decisive goal to make it 3-1 in extra time of the final against Atlético Madrid . Marcelo then extended his contract to 2020 and finally established himself as one of the world's best left-backs. Between 2015 and 2019 he was inducted into FIFA FIFPro World XI five more times. In September 2017, he extended his contract again until 2022. Under coach Zinédine Zidane , he was one of the pillars of the team that won the UEFA Champions League, a championship, a Supercopa three times in a row, as well as twice the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup won.

Marcelo (March 2018)

As a junior, Marcelo won the South American Championship with the Brazilian U-17 in 2005 , and he himself scored three goals in six appearances. He then played the U-17 World Cup , in which the Seleção only failed in the final to Mexico .

On September 5, 2006, the then 18-year-old Marcelo made his debut in the Brazilian senior team and scored his first goal on his first appearance against Wales . He was also in Brazil's squad for the 2007 U20 World Cup .

At the 2008 Summer Olympics , Marcelo won the bronze medal with the Brazilian team. In the quarter-finals against Cameroon, he scored the goal in extra time to make it 2-0.

Under the new national coach Mano Menezes , who took over from Dunga after the 2010 World Cup , Marcelo was initially considered again, as he played a strong season at Real Madrid. For disciplinary reasons, however, he was not in the squad for the 2011 Copa America in Argentina . Marcelo inadvertently emailed the Seleção coach shortly after he canceled the friendly against Scotland in late March due to back pain. In it he stated that the matter with the national team was settled and that he was now available to the club, by which his club Real Madrid is meant. Menezes confirmed the incident on a Brazilian talk show. Real Madrid then defended Marcelo and said that he had not faked the injury but suffered from a bruised rib. This injury was certified by the doctors of the national team and the team doctors from Real Madrid. Marcelo was pardoned for the friendly against Ghana on September 5, 2011.

Also in 2012, he was one of three older players with the Olympic team in the Olympic Games in London , where Brazil wanted to win the gold medal for the first time. In the final, however, Brazil had to admit defeat to the Mexican team 1: 2 . Marcelo was used in all six games and is now with twelve games together with Bebeto and Neymar Brazilian record player at the Olympic Games.

Marcelo was also called up for the 2014 World Cup in his own country. In the opening game he caused an own goal against Croatia , which was also the first goal of the tournament. Nevertheless, the team won the game 3-1.
