Ramos, who was born in Camas in the Andalusian province of Seville , played for Sevilla FC from his youth and from 2003 he played for Sevilla Atlético , the club's second team. In January 2004 he was included in the first team, for which he made his league debut on February 1, the 22nd matchday of the 2003/04 season , in the 0-1 defeat of Seville against Deportivo La Coruña . In the 2004/05 season he fought for a regular position as a right defender at Sevilla.

He has been with Real Madrid since the 2005/06 season . At Real, he immediately prevailed and has not played fewer than 23 league games in any season since then. In 2007 , 2008 , 2012 , 2017 and 2020 he won the championship with the Spanish capital city club , in 2008 also the Supercopa de España and in 2011 in the final against FC Barcelona the Copa del Rey . During the celebrations after the victory, he dropped the trophy from a double-decker bus onto the street, whereupon the trophy was caught and damaged by the moving bus.

In Clásico on November 29, 2010, Ramos received his tenth expulsion in 175 games for Real Madrid. He set the previous club record for Fernando Hierro , who had needed 439 matches.

In 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Sergio Ramos won the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid . The special thing about the Champions League victory in 2017 was the title defense, which no team had done before. In the 2014 final win against city rivals Atlético Madrid in Lisbon , Ramos scored the equalizer to make it 1-1 in the third minute of stoppage time , while Real finally won 4-1 in extra time . Ramos had already scored the important goals in the semi-final second leg against FC Bayern Munich to make it 1-0 and 2-0. Again in 2016 he scored a goal in the final against Atlético Madrid in Milan , the opening goal for eventual winners Real in the 15th minute. Ramos was voted into the “Eleven of the Year” in 2014 by European Sports Media , an association of European sports newspapers, alongside players like Franck Ribéry , Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo . He received the same honor from FIFA / FIFPro and UEFA .

On August 17, 2015, the defense chief extended his contract early until 2020.

In November 2018, as part of the Football Leaks revelations, it became known that Ramos had been guilty of two doping offenses in the past. During a doping control after the Champions League final on June 3, 2017, the active ingredient dexamethasone was found in Ramos' urine . The ingestion of this active ingredient is permitted, but the team doctor did not report it to UEFA as prescribed. The incident had no consequences for Ramos. Ten months later, Ramos refused a doping control after a league game and instead took a shower. Instead of the usual doping procedure by the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency and UEFA , the procedure, which was only initiated six months later, was soon closed.

Sergio Ramos at the EM 2012

While Spain failed at the 2006 World Cup after a very good preliminary round in the round of 16 against eventual runner-up world champion France , a unique series of victories began in 2008: Spain won the European Championship and World Championship in a row and defended the European Championship in 2012. Only in 2009 they were in the Confederations Cup only finished third. With three exceptions, Ramos played in the starting XI in all tournaments. While he initially acted as a right full-back, he was used in the central defense at the 2012 European Championship. Both at Real Madrid and in the national team, Ramos interprets the position of the right defender very aggressively, but is preferred for central defense. He is valued in defense because of his strength in duels and positional play. This is mainly due to his timing. Due to his heading ability he is at set-pieces always near the opponent's penalty area found.

Ramos enjoys in Madrid hero status, he scored in injury time of the Champions League - final in 2014 against city rivals Atletico Madrid equalizer for 1: 1 and led his team to the ultimately successful extension. Two years later he hit Atlético Madrid again in the 2016 final to take the lead and prevented a 3-1 outnumbered situation in stoppage time with a foul with no chance of the ball in stoppage time, which was only punished by the referee with a yellow card . In addition, he is regarded as a leader and motivator who seeks closeness to the audience during the games.

However, Ramos is also known for his tough style of play. He holds the club record at Real Madrid (as of December 3, 2017) for the most yellow cards (222) and red cards (24) and the league record for the most red (19) and yellow cards in the Primera División (165) and Spanish national team (21). After Mohamed Salah from Liverpool during the UEFA Champions League final in 2018 was injured in a fight with Ramos at the shoulder and be replaced had to Ramos' tackles in sections of the media was criticized as too harsh or unfair. Ramos also hit goalkeeper Loris Karius with his elbow in the face after a kick from his opponent Virgil van Dijk , causing him to suffer a concussion that was only noticed days after the game. Doctors did not rule out that Karius' eyesight was disturbed as a result and that the Liverpool goalkeeper's two game-changing serious mistakes could have occurred.
