society

Valdés had started playing football at Penya Barcelonista Cinc Copes before joining the FC Barcelona youth academy in July 1992 at the age of ten . In September 1992 he moved with his family to Tenerife , completed three seasons with third division UD Tenerife Sur Ibarra and returned to Barcelona in 1995 . After five seasons in the youth department, he moved up to the second team , for which he completed 77 second division games in three seasons .

In the 2002/03 season he played for the first team of FC Barcelona for the first time; He made his debut in the Primera División on September 1, 2002 (1st matchday) in a 2-2 home game against Atlético Madrid . In the course of the season he guarded the goal in alternation with Roberto Bonano before coach Radomir Antić finally declared him the goalkeeper at the end of the season. Also in the 2003/04 season under coach Frank Rijkaard he remained first choice and contributed to second place in the championship. In the 2004/05 season he played 35 of 38 league games and conceded 25 goals, which earned him the Zamora trophy and helped FC Barcelona to their first title win in six years.

In the 2005/06 season he was not without controversy, but won the double with Barcelona and was involved in the Champions League win on May 17, 2006 , when he saved two shots by Thierry Henry from close range in the final against Arsenal .

On May 27, 2009 Valdés won the Champions League again with FC Barcelona; in the final against Manchester United he stayed clean. This season he also won the Spanish championship and the Copa del Rey . FC Barcelona was the first Spanish club to secure the triple . In July 2009 Valdés extended his contract with FC Barcelona prematurely until June 2014. At the end of the 2009/10 season , in which he had played all league games over 90 minutes, he won the Spanish championship again and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA with FC Barcelona Champions League.

In the 2010/11 season , Valdés won the Zamora trophy for the goalkeeper with the fewest goals for the fourth time in a row. His percentage of goals conceded (16 goals in 32 games) is only beaten by Francisco Liaño (from the 1993/94 season ). With FC Barcelona he also won the Spanish championship and the UEFA Champions League again.

At the end of the 2011/12 season , Valdés received the "Golden Zamora" because he had won the Zamora trophy for the fifth time. Only Antoni Ramallets had succeeded in this before .

In early 2013, Valdés announced that he would not extend his contract, which ran until the summer of 2014, in order to “get to know other cultures and other leagues”.

After FC Barcelona had lost the Clásico at Real Madrid 2-1 in March 2013 , Valdés saw the red card after the end of the game . He was outraged that a penalty was not given . His verbal attacks, which were punished with the red card, punished the disciplinary committee of the Spanish Football Association with a four-game ban. FC Barcelona protested.

On March 26, 2014, Valdés tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the league game against Celta Vigo . FC Barcelona offered to extend his contract, as the cruciate ligament rupture might prevent him from finding a new club. Valdés declined in a public letter, however, saying: "The time has come to leave FC Barcelona". In the subsequent transfer period in summer, a transfer to AS Monaco failed after a failed medical check.

After Valdés had already kept fit for a few weeks at Manchester United , he received a contract running until June 30, 2016 with an option for a further year on January 8, 2015. In Manchester , Valdés, who was scheduled as the second goalkeeper behind his compatriot David de Gea , met coach Louis van Gaal , under whom he had once made his professional debut in Barcelona.

In January 2016, Valdés was loaned to Standard Liège in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League until the end of the 2015/16 season, as he no longer played a role in the team around coach van Gaal. With the team he won the Belgian Cup competition on March 20, 2016 .

For the 2016/17 season Valdés moved to the Premier League promoted FC Middlesbrough .

On August 18, 2017, he announced the end of his career.

National team

Valdés, who has played regularly for the Catalan national team since 2001 , made his debut in the U-18 national team in 2001 and reached third place with her at the European Championships in Finland . After he had also played international matches for the U-19 and U-20 national team in the same year , he was also used in eleven games for the U-21 national team from 2002 to 2003 .

He made his international debut in the senior national team on June 3, 2010 in Innsbruck in a test international match in a 1-0 win against South Korea . He had previously been appointed to the squad for the 2010 World Cup by national coach Vicente del Bosque . The tournament ended the national team as world champions , for the first time in the association's history, but Valdes was not used in any game.

In 2012 Valdés was European champion with the Spanish national team , but was not used again.

He was also appointed to the squad of the Spanish national soccer team for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , but was unable to participate in the tournament because he had to cancel the tournament due to a torn cruciate ligament.
