Álvaro Arbeloa Coca (born January 17, 1983 in Salamanca ) is a former Spanish football player . His preferred positions were right side defense and central defense .

Career

real Madrid

Álvaro Arbeloa began his career in the Real Zaragoza youth team and joined Real Madrid's youth team in the summer of 2000. With the club's second team, Real Madrid Castilla , he achieved promotion to the Segunda División in the 2004/05 season . He played a total of 84 games in this stage and scored one goal. He made his debut in Real Madrid's first squad on October 16, 2004 against Betis Sevilla and made two appearances in the 2004/05 season.

On July 24, 2006, he finally moved to Deportivo La Coruña for 1.3 million euros , where he quickly secured a regular place as a central defender. Arbeloa justified the move with the desire to gain more experience in the Primera División and he saw no chance to play often at Real Madrid.

Liverpool FC

His strong performances with the Galicians meant that Liverpool FC signed Arbeloa's former coach Benitez in January 2007 for around four million euros. He made his debut with the Reds on February 10, 2007 against Newcastle United . In the 2007 UEFA Champions League eighth-finals against FC Barcelona , Arbeloa held a starting position as a left-back for the first time, successfully keeping Lionel Messi under control and thus helping Liverpool to win the game 2-1. Arbeloa scored his first goal for Liverpool on 7 April 2007 against Reading FC .

For the 2007/08 season, Arbeloa changed his jersey number from 2 to 17. In the friendly matches as well as in the first games of the season, he showed consistently good performances and secured the starting position as a right-back.

real Madrid

For the 2009/10 season Arbeloa returned to Real Madrid for a transfer fee of around four million euros. He signed a contract until 2014 and immediately gained a regular position as a right full-back, but had to temporarily share this position with Sergio Ramos in the 2010/11 season after the central defense was reinforced with Ricardo Carvalho . In the final win against FC Barcelona in the 2010/11 Copa del Rey , he was in the starting line-up. In the course of the 2011/12 season, Sergio Ramos moved back to central defense as a result of Carvalho's long injury break. Thereupon again a regular player in his position, Arbeloa played 26 league games and won the Spanish championship with Real Madrid. In early August 2012, he extended his contract with the royal team prematurely until 2016. With the commitment of Dani Carvajal , Arbeloa lost his regular place in the 2013/14 season. He subsequently won the trophy again, the first time the UEFA Champions League and then the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup . His contract, which expired after the 2015/16 season , was not extended and Arbeloa said goodbye to the club and his teammates in the last home game. At the end of the season he won the Champions League again with Real Madrid .

West Ham United

Shortly before the end of the transfer window, Arbeloa moved to West Ham United for the 2016/17 season . There he ended his active career in the summer of 2017.

National team

On March 26, 2008, Arbeloa made his debut for the Spanish national team against Italy . In the same year he won the European Championship with Spain . In this tournament he came in the last group game against Greece for a use. Arbeloa was also part of the successful Spanish national team at the 2010 World Cup . However, he was only used in the group game against Honduras . At the European Championship 2012 Arbeloa was a regular player and won the title again with Spain. He played in the right full defense alongside Sergio Ramos, Gerard Piqué and Jordi Alba at this tournament. In May 2014 he announced his retirement from the national team after 56 international matches after he had not been nominated for the 2014 World Cup .
