society

As a child, Puyol first played as a goalkeeper in his native La Pobla de Segur . Because of the many cement football pitches, his doctor recommended that he continue playing in a different position and so he became a striker . He played in other positions again and again and was accepted into La Masia , the youth academy of FC Barcelona , in 1995 as a 17-year-old . In 1997 he was promoted to the B-team of Barça and two years later was brought on by then coach Louis van Gaal as a defender in the first team.

He made his professional debut on October 2, 1999 in the game against Real Valladolid in the Primera División , which FC Barcelona won 2-0. Since that game he has been in the starting lineup in at least half of all league games in every season with the exception of the 2000/01 season. In 2001 he received an award from Don Balón magazine as the best newcomer of the season. Initially used as a right full -back, he later developed into a permanent fixture at Barça as a central defender and was team captain from 2004 to 2014 .

In the 2008/09 season, in which FC Barcelona won the triple, Puyol was one of the top performers on his team. Apart from the Champions League final against Manchester United , in which Pep Guardiola placed him as the right full-back due to Dani Alves' suspension , he mostly played in central defense with Rafael Márquez or Gerard Piqué . In Barcelona's historic 6-2 win against Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu this season, Puyol gave his side a 2-1 lead with a header from Xavi's free-kick . It was his first league goal since his goal on the last day of the 2006/07 season in a 5-1 win against Gimnàstic de Tarragona .

At the beginning of the 2009/10 season , Puyol's future at Barça was a bit unclear due to the commitment of the young central defender Dmytro Tschyhrynskyj for 25 million euros, as his contract was only valid until 2010. Ultimately, Puyol was able to remove all doubts with the extension of his contract for three more years in October 2009 and a season in which he could have the most minutes after goalkeeper Víctor Valdés . In addition, he won the FIFA Club World Cup with his club during the season and was again Spanish champions at the end of the season.

Puyol missed the first two league games of the 2010/11 season due to injury. In the following games he was a member of the starting line-up in almost every game until matchday 20, in mid-January. By the end of the season, he then played only four more competitive games, as he was plagued several times by an injury to his left knee. His team won the Spanish championship and the UEFA Champions League this season.

In January 2013, his contract was extended to summer 2016. On March 4, 2014, Puyol announced that he would terminate his contract for health reasons at the end of the season and leave the club. In July 2014 he ended his career and moved to the board of the association.

National team

Puyol played for the Spanish Olympic selection, which won the silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games . He played five of his team's six games, one of them as a substitute. He was also in the starting line-up in the narrow final defeat against Cameroon on penalties.

On November 15, 2000, Puyol played his first international match for the Spanish senior team against the Netherlands . Since 2001 he has also played four times for Catalonia's football team .

In 2002 he took part in Spain's first major tournament, the 2002 World Cup. He played in all matches - except in the last group game - of his team, which were eliminated in the quarter-finals, over the full season. In the second group game against Paraguay , Puyol underwent an own goal as Iker Casillas fisted the ball in his legs during a defensive move, from where the ball spun back into the goal. Despite this early deficit in the 10th minute, his team converted the deficit to a 3-1 victory, which meant that Spain qualified early for the round of 16. Puyol, who was the right full-back at this tournament, prepared the opening goal from Fernando Morientes with a cross in the round of 16 against Ireland . Spain ultimately won against Ireland on penalties. Despite a good performance by Puyol in the quarter-finals against hosts South Korea , Spain lost on penalties.

Two years later he was part of the Spain squad for the 2004 European Championship and was in the starting line-up in all his team's games. After an expected 1-0 win against Russia in the first group game, in which the winning goal scorer Juan Carlos Valerón was served by a low cross from Puyol, a sobering 1-1 draw against eventual European champions Greece followed . Since the last group game against hosts Portugal was lost 1-0, Spain was eliminated in the group stage.

In 2006 Puyol played his second World Cup with Spain . There he was, now playing in the center-back position, in Spain's 4-0 opener win against Ukraine, the passer of the last goal by Fernando Torres . In the following game against Tunisia , his loss of the ball led to Jawhar Mnari's opening goal . Since the game could still be turned into a 3-1 success, the safely qualified Spain spared some players in the last group game, including Puyol. Once again, Spain, classified as tournament favorites, disappointed in the round of 16 against France , in which Puyol also had a bad day and caused the free kick that led to the 2-1 draw. After David Villa's opening goal in the 28th minute, Spain lost 3-1.

The Spanish national team met all expectations at EURO 2008 , in which Puyol, as head of defense, ensured that Spain only conceded three goals in six games. He did not play in the game against Greece and in the game against Sweden he was replaced early because of a foot injury. In all other Spanish matches, he played for the full season and thus helped his country win its first major title since 1964 . Subsequently, Puyol and his partner in central defense, Carlos Marchena , were elected to the team of the tournament.

At the Confed Cup 2009 , Puyol wore the captain's armband for the first time in the group game against South Africa , as Iker Casillas was the first captain to play. Puyol finished the tournament with his team in third place and was then elected to the All-Star Team of the Confederation Cup.

The expectations of the Spanish national team at the 2010 World Cup were correspondingly high after a flawless qualification. Puyol and his Barça team-mate Gerard Piqué formed the central defense at all games. After a bad start, a 1-0 defeat against Switzerland , Spain survived the group stage. In the following round of 16 against Portugal , Puyol was lucky that his attempt to clear after a cross from Hugo Almeida when the score was 0-0 did not land in his own goal. In the end, the game, like the quarter-finals against Paraguay , was won 1-0 by a goal from David Villa. In the semi-final against Germany , he scored the winning goal with a powerful header from a corner from Xavi . Up to this game, Puyol had only scored two international goals in 88 games, one in a 5-0 friendly win against Northern Ireland in April 2002 and the other in October 2008 in a 3-0 win against Estonia in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup . In the final against the Netherlands he played the full 120 minutes, but saw a yellow card early in the game and revealed a lack of speed against Arjen Robben , which in the 82nd minute almost led to the opponent's 1-0. With Andrés Iniesta's winning goal in the 116th minute, Spain finally won a World Cup for the first time . After the tournament it was initially unclear whether Puyol would continue his career in the national team, as he actually wanted to resign from the national team after the World Cup. In August 2010, however, Puyol decided to play for Spain until the 2012 European Championship . Because of a knee operation, however, he ultimately had to forego participation.

On February 6, 2013 he made his 100th international match in the 3-1 win against the first world champion Uruguay after almost a year injury break . This was also his last international match.

Manager

In May 2014, Puyol became assistant to FC Barcelona's sports director, Andoni Zubizarreta . At the beginning of January 2015 he resigned when Zubizarreta was released.

Play style and skills

Puyol was a tough, aggressive player with spectacular physical activity (e.g. flying headers), which is why he was nicknamed "el tiburón" (in German: "the shark") or "Superman" in Spain. He played mostly fair and got by without a foul, which was also thanks to his good timing. He was flexible in defense and was best known for his great ambition and exemplary attitude. In addition, he jumped enormously and was therefore very strong in the ball despite his height of 178 cm, which is why he repeatedly moved up in set pieces of his team.

His former junior coach Oriol Tort said of him: “It may be that the boy has a lot less talent than others, but what he has to be able to do he will learn. But I've never met anyone who was so ambitious to learn. "

Others

Puyol has a daughter (* 2014) with his partner Vanesa Lorenzo. He is committed to animal welfare . He is an honorary member of the Fundación Altarriba , which takes care of abandoned animals.
