Andrés Palop Cervera (born October 22, 1973 in La Alcudia , Valencia Province ) is a former Spanish football goalkeeper . He was only used in his home country during his career in the men's field between 1995 and 2014, where he completed 283 games in the Spanish top division . Only in his final year as a professional he went to move abroad and was awarded 39 years in Germany at Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen first goalkeeper of the team.

With the A selection of his country , he took part in the 2008 European Championships in Austria and Switzerland , with his team winning the tournament. Palop, however, never played for the selection.

Since 2015 he has been working as head coach in the Spanish amateur sector.

Club career

Andrés Palop began his career in the youth team of FC Valencia . From there he was promoted to the B-Elf in 1992 and played 68 games in the following five years. In 1997 he moved to Villarreal , which made promotion to the Primera División in its first season . A season later, the club rose again and Palop moved back to Valencia CF. Under the then coach Héctor Cúper , however, he could not prevail against Santiago Cañizares and was hardly used.

Palop experienced both the great national and international successes of the club mostly from the exchange bank. Therefore, he moved in 2005 to league rivals Sevilla FC , where he was used as a regular goalkeeper.

Palop caused a sensation in the UEFA Cup eight -finals match at Shakhtar Donetsk in 2007 when he hit a 2-2 header in stoppage time, bringing his team, which ultimately won 3-2, into extra time. Sevilla won the cup after Palop saved three penalties on penalties in the final against Espanyol Barcelona .

For the 2013/14 season , the almost 40-year-old Palop moved abroad after a total of eight years and 217 league appearances for Sevilla FC. He signed a one-year contract with Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen to take on the role of substitute goalkeeper behind Bernd Leno . At the end of the 2013/14 season, Palop ended his career.

National team career

Palop was first called up for the Spanish national team in August 2007, but was not used. At the European Championship in 2008 he was part of the Spanish squad and won the title with his team. Although he was on the bench in several games, Palop was never used in his national team career.
