Capdevila started his professional career with Espanyol Barcelona second team . For the first team he made his debut on the 8th match day of the 1998/99 season in a 2-2 win against Athletic Bilbao . Afterwards he was an indispensable part of the first team and played a total of 29 league games this season, 27 of them from the start.

For the 1999/00 season Capdevila moved to Atlético Madrid . At Atlético, too, the man was placed on the left wing, but relegated to the Segunda División with the team at the end of the season .

He then moved to Deportivo La Coruña , where he initially fought with Enrique Romero for a place in the starting XI. Due to his good performances, he rose to the undisputed regular in his second season and won the Spanish Cup with Depor in 2002 . After Depor became more and more a middle-class club in the following years, he moved to Villarreal for the 2007/08 season .

With Villarreal he achieved an excellent second place in the 2007/08 Spanish league , with which the team qualified directly for the UEFA Champions League . He played all league games apart from two games that season. In the following season Villarreal reached fifth place in the league and was eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals against Arsenal . As in the previous season, Capdevila played 36 league games, but was twice more successful as a goalscorer.

In the 2009/10 season he only missed one league game, he played the other 37 from start to finish. In the game against Getafe FC on matchday 13 of the season, he scored two goals for his team's 3-2 victory. At the end of the season, Villarreal were two points short of Getafe CF to secure the last possible European starting place.

For the 2011/12 season Capdevila moved to Benfica Lisbon , where he signed a two-year contract.

On July 27, 2012, the move to the Spanish first division club Espanyol Barcelona was announced. Capdevila signed with the Catalans for one season.

After playing for the Indian club NorthEast United from summer 2014 , Capdevila moved to Lierse SK in Belgium six months later . In 2017 he signed a contract with the Andorran champions FC Santa Coloma and became the first world champion in the first division in Andorra.

National team

In 2000 he took part with the Spanish Olympic team at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney . He moved with his team in the final against Cameroon. Ultimately, the Spanish players had to be content with winning the silver medal after losing on penalties.

Capdevila made his debut in the Spanish national team on October 16, 2002 in a 0-0 draw against Paraguay . After the 2006 World Cup, Capdevila became a regular player and scored his first goal for the national team in the qualifying match for EURO 2008 against Sweden in November 2007 .

In May 2008, Luis Aragonés appointed him to the squad for the 2008 European Championships , where he was European champion as a regular player.

In 2009 he took part in the 2009 Confed Cup with Spain . There he gave two assists in the 5-0 win over New Zealand and the other three goals in this game were all initiated via his left side. After the tournament, which Spain finished third, Capdevila was voted into the team of the tournament by the fans.

After he was used in nine out of ten games in the qualifying games, Vicente del Bosque nominated him for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa in the Spanish squad . Next to goalkeeper Iker Casillas and Gerard Piqué, he was the only Spanish player who was on the pitch every minute. He had a share in Spain's first ever World Cup win after defeating the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time in the final.
