Sergio Busquets Burgos [ ˈseɾxio βusˈkets ] (born July 16, 1988 in Sabadell , Catalonia ) is a Spanish football player . The defensive midfielder has been under contract with FC Barcelona since 2008 .

He is the son of Carles Busquets , who guarded the goal of FC Barcelona in the early 1990s.

Club career

Busquets joined FC Barcelona's A youth team in 2005, with whom he won three titles within two years and was one of the key players alongside Crosas , Giovani and Bojan . In 2007 he rose to FC Barcelona B , for whom he scored two goals in 23 games under coach Pep Guardiola .

He made his league debut for the A team of FC Barcelona , again under Guardiola, on September 13, 2008 against Racing Santander , when he played for the full season. Busquets scored his first competitive goal for Barcelona less than a month later in Barça's 5-0 victory over FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League .

On December 22, 2008, he extended his contract with Barcelona until 2013 with a release clause of 80 million euros. Despite the strong competition from national players Yaya Touré and Seydou Keita in the defensive midfield of FC Barcelona, Busquets played 24 league games in his first first division season, 16 of them from the start. He was also in the starting line-up in both the Spanish Cup final and the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League final , contributing to Barça's first triple win . In the 2009/10 season his good form continued and he was preferred to Touré in defensive midfield. He played 33 league games in 2009/10 and successfully defended the Spanish championship title with Barcelona. At the end of January 2011, Busquets extended his contract for another two years until 2015; in August 2013 again until 2018 with an extension option for a further year. In the contract, an amount of 150 million euros was also set as a transfer fee. For the 2014/15 season Busquets took over the number five shirt from Carles Puyol , who had ended his career. Busquets has been the deputy team captain behind Lionel Messi since the 2018/19 season . At the end of September 2018, Busquets extended its contract until June 30, 2023; his release clause was set at € 500 million.

National team career

On October 11, 2008, Busquets played for the first time for his country's U21 team in the 2-1 loss to Switzerland , in which he scored the first goal of the game. However, Spain won the second leg 3-1 after extra time, so that they could qualify for the U21 European Championship 2009 . He was unable to take part in the final round because of his participation in the 2009 Confed Cup, which was taking place at the same time . He made his international debut in the senior national team of Spain on April 1, 2009 in a World Cup qualifier against Turkey .

At the Confed Cup 2009 he was third with Spain. He was used three times in this tournament.

After he had played a total of three games in the qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup , he was nominated by Vicente del Bosque for the finals of this tournament. As a regular alongside Xabi Alonso in the central defensive midfield, he won the finals of this tournament with a 1-0 win over the Netherlands ( Iniesta scored the decisive goal in the 116th minute), the first world title with the Spanish national team.

At the European Championships in France in 2016 , he was again included as a regular in Spain's squad. He played all four of the team's games over the full 90 minutes. Spain was eliminated with the last 16 defeat against Italy.

Play style and skills

The strengths of the tall, defensive midfielder lie primarily in his overview of the game, the precise passing accuracy, his ball security, in duel behavior and in conquering the ball.
