Sabadell [ səβəˈðeʎ ] ( Province of Barcelona ) is an industrial city in Catalonia ( Spain ) and is located about 20 km northwest of Barcelona . On January 1, 2019, 213,644 people lived in this city.
Geographical location
The city is 189 m above sea level (Plaça de Sant Roc).
Sabadell lies in the comarca of Vallès Occidental and, together with the neighboring town of Terrassa, is the administrative center of this district. The urban area covers 3850.5 ha, of which 1859.2 ha are in the city center. The city is located on the Ripoll River.
Origin of name
The place name Sabadell was first mentioned in a manuscript from 1050 in reference to a trade route associated with the city of Sant Cugat del Vallès . The origin of the name has not yet been clarified and the explanations are divided into different camps. One hypothesis relates to the arrival of a Collsabadell family who ran a hostel, another to the Latin place name badallum in relation to the Roman fortress at the time over the Ripoll River, and further to the church of San Salvador, which in old church documents is called Salvadorell is led to Salvadell . However, some historians derive the name Sabadell from sabbatum (Saturday), on which the market takes place, and justify this with the onion shown in the coat of arms.
history
Archaeological finds in the Roqueta Gambús area show that the core of the original village of Sabadell was used by farmers and shepherds from Europe more than 3800 years ago. The inhabitants, then called the Iberian Arrahona, mainly engaged in agriculture, cattle breeding, hunting and fishing. Their houses had a simple rectangular floor plan and were built of stone using drywall construction. The pottery used was not very well developed and proves its origin from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
After the arrival of the Romans in 218 BC A process of Romanization began in the Iberian culture. The early Roman sites and uncovering of the buildings and villas indicate that the facilities were mainly used for the processing of wine at this time.
During the Middle Ages, buildings were erected on the right bank of the Ripoll River, the first buildings next to the Chapel of San Salvador (now the Church of San Felix), where the location of flour mills has been documented since 1076. Two mills from this period have been restored and can be visited today.
In Roman times there was a small village on the site where the church of La Salut is today. This village was first mentioned in the Middle Ages under the name Arraona or Arrahona . Another small village was on the other side of the Ripoll River . This second village was called Sabadell. In 1378 around 600 people lived there and the chronicle recorded 152 houses. Sabadell was surrounded by a wall. In the 16th century, due to the population growth, more houses were built outside the city wall.
At this time, the introduction and spread of industrial forms of production and distribution of goods and services in the city, which had mainly specialized in clothing made of wool, began. The importance of the wool industry in Sabadell increased over the next few centuries. As early as 1800, the city's population had grown to over 2000 people.
The 19th century brought two other important developments for Sabadell. In 1856 the place was connected to the railway network. In 1877 Sabadell got city rights after the surrounding villages were amalgamated. At the 1897 census, Sabadell recorded a population of 23,044 people.
Sabadell became the main manufacturer of woolen clothing in all of Spain and these clothing were exported worldwide.
