history

With the background to financially support the local industry and to provide important raw materials, 127 businessmen and traders from Sabadell founded the bank on December 31, 1881. From 1907 the company concentrated only on the actual banking business; all lines of business not belonging to the core area were given up. A slow territorial expansion into nearby cities began in 1965. In 1975 the first branch was opened in the Spanish capital, Madrid ; three years later in London .

Sabadell MultiBanca, later known as Sabadell Banca Privada , was founded in 1988 and the Banco Sabadell Group was created. With the takeover of the NatWest España Group in 1996, the sixth largest Spanish banking group was formed; the name of the old credit institution was changed to Solbank . Through a share swap with the Portuguese bank Banco Comercial Português , Sparkasse la Caixa became the largest shareholder in 2000. After the incorporation of Banco Herrero , the fourth largest banking group in the country was created.

From 2001, the bank's shares went public. Two years later, the company started with a 100% takeover offer for Banco Atlántico , which was completed the following year and ultimately led to the formation of SabadellAtlántico . The subsidiary Banco Atlántico (Panamá), SA was then sold to the financial institution Grupo Financiero Continental, SA from Panama for 96 million euros . 2006 the Banco Urquijo was bought; the second largest private credit institution in Spain was created.

In 2009 the group acquired the Mellon United National Bank (MUNB), founded in 1978 and based in Florida .

As a consequence of the conflict over the independence referendum in Catalonia , the bank decided in early October 2017 to relocate its headquarters from Sabadell to Alicante .
