Red Eléctrica de España (REE) is a publicly traded company based in Madrid , which, as the national transmission system operator in Spain, is responsible for the operation of the high-voltage electrical network . REE was founded in 1985 and was the first company in the world whose business area consisted exclusively of energy transport. The main shareholder with 20% is the state-owned Sociedad Estatal de Participaciones Industriales (SEPI).
With over 43,800 km of line length and around 5,500 transformer stations, REE owns most of the Spanish high-voltage network (as of 2017).
The company is also active in Peru and Chile, among others.
The telecommunications subsidiary Albura, with around 7,500 kilometers of fiber optic cable, was taken over by T-Online in 2005 for EUR 61.5 million from the energy company Red Eléctrica de España SA .
