Grifols SA is a Spanish multinational pharmaceutical and chemical company . It mainly produces derivatives from blood plasma and is the market leader in Europe in this area . The company also supplies medical devices and starting materials for test laboratories . Grifols has been listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange since May 2006 and was included in the IBEX 35 stock exchange index in January 2008 .

history

Grifols was founded in 1940 by José Antonio Grifols Roig (1885-1976), a hematologist and scientist, and his two sons Víctor and José Antonio Grifols y Lucas († 1958). In 1951 Grifols Roig was the first to publish the procedure for plasmapheresis . The company launched its human immunoglobulin for intravenous use ( IVIG ) in the European market in the mid-1990s. In 2003, Grifols took over Alpha Therapeutic Corporation , based in Los Angeles. In March 2018, the complete takeover of Haema , the largest private blood donation service in Germany, by Grifols was agreed; in December Haema was sold to the Dutch investment group Scranton Enterprises, which is a Grifols shareholder.
