CaixaBank , SA with administration in Barcelona and legal seat in Valencia , is Spain's leading retail bank with 18.8 million private customers, over 37,000 employees and 5468 branches. The listed Caixabank emerged in 2011 from “ la Caixa ”, which was formerly run as a savings bank .

Caixabank emerged from the investment company Criteria CaixaCorp , which has been listed on the stock exchange since 2007 and in which the former savings bank "la Caixa" held its industrial holdings and an extensive real estate portfolio, including Gas Natural , Repsol YPF , Telefónica and Abertis . In the course of a far-reaching restructuring in 2011, the entire operational banking and insurance business, as well as all banking and insurance holdings of Caixa were transferred to the listed Criteria CaixaCorp and renamed Caixabank; At the same time, the industrial holdings and the property portfolio of Criteria CaixaCorp were outsourced. The public service provider of the Caixa ( Fundacion Bancaria "la Caixa" ) initially held 76% of the Caixabank; their share has since fallen to 40% today and they no longer hold a majority on the board of directors.
In August 2012, Banca Civica was taken over. At the end of 2012, the company acquired the bank Banco de Valencia . In 2014, Caixabank acquired the corporate and private customer business and asset management business from Barclays for EUR 800 million.
Caixabank has a 44 percent stake in the Portuguese Banco Português de Investimento and made an offer in April 2016 to take over the remaining shares in the bank for 908 million euros.
At the beginning of October 2017, the bank's board of directors decided to move the legal headquarters from Barcelona to Valencia after the threat of considerable legal uncertainty in the wake of the Catalan independence referendum ; the workplaces in the head office in Barcelona will not be affected in the short term. The bank moved into the Banco de Valencia building in the center of Valencia as its new headquarters .
