The Banco Português de Investimento ( BPI ) is a private Portuguese universal bank . It conducts banking business with companies, institutional and private customers. It was founded as Sociedade Portuguêsa de Investimentos in 1981 by Artur Santos Silva . It is the third largest private Portuguese financial group with assets of 112.90 billion euros (as of 2009). Fernando Ulrich is the chairman and CEO . Headquarters is Porto .

The Banco BPI commercial bank group has more than 1.4 million customers, individuals, companies and institutions. Through its multi-channel distribution network with 674 branches, 30 investment centers and branches, the bank specializes in home loans with a network of outside companies. The bank is mainly active in Portugal , as well as Spain , Angola and Mozambique . In Angola, BPI is the market leader in corporate banking and its activity reaches a 25% market share through its 50.1% stake in the Angolan Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) with 750,000 customers (as of December 2010). In Mozambique, the BPI holds a 30 percent stake in the bank BCI Fomento .

On October 25, 2007, the BPI submitted a merger proposal to Banco Comercial Português , the largest private bank in Portugal. BCP's board of directors has rejected the proposal.

The largest shareholders in BPI are (as of August 2012): 46.22% of the shares are held by the Catalan Caixabank , the Angolan investor Isabel dos Santos holds 19.43 percent and the German Allianz holds 8.8 percent.

In April 2016, Caixabank submitted an offer to take over the remaining shares in BPI for 908 million euros.
