Banco Comercial Português (BCP), in German Portuguese commercial bank , or Millennium BCP since 2004, is the largest Portuguese universal bank . The bank, founded in 1985, is listed in both Euronext Lisbon and PSI 20 . The current CEO is Paulo Teixeira Pinto. The bank is based in Porto , but most of its operations are carried out from its offices in Oeiras , a suburb of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. Since 2004, the bank's customer business has been running under the name Millennium BCP .

In 1985, Jorge Jardim Gonçalves , a Portuguese entrepreneur who was actively involved in the colonial war in Angola, founded a new northern Portuguese bank with the name Banco Comercial Português together with Américo Amorim , António Gonçalves and Alberto Pinto Basto . At the time, the bank was still based in the largest northern Portuguese city of Porto. Since it was founded, the company has been operating throughout Portugal and following an aggressive expansion strategy. In 1995 BCP took over Banco Português do Atlântico , and in 2000 the banks Banco Mello and Banco Pinto e Sotto Mayor .

In 2003/2004, all of BCP's customer businesses were run under the name Millennium BCP in order to standardize all of the individual companies that have been acquired over the past decades.

In 2007, a takeover by the Portuguese Banco Português de Investimento (BPI) failed .

Expansion abroad

After the reintroduction of the market economy in Poland, the bank founded a subsidiary there in 1989 under the name Millennium Bank . The Polish branch was among other things the first bank to be traded on the Polish stock market.

Until 2007, the bank also operated in Canada under the name BCP Bank , but the branches have since been taken over by BMO Bank of Montreal . The bank also has branches in Romania, Greece, Turkey and the former Portuguese colonies of Macao, Mozambique, where Millennium bim is the majority shareholder , and Angola.

The bank also has three representations in Switzerland .

In 2006, the total assets of Banco Comercial Português totaled 79.259 million euros, and net operating income totaled 2.703 billion euros.

In the 2006 financial year, BCP operated 864 branches throughout Portugal and 614 in other countries around the world (Poland, Romania, Greece, etc.). BCP has over four million customers worldwide.

Ownership structures

The BCP Millennium share is listed in the Portuguese Stock Index 20.

In December 2016 it was announced that the Chinese Fosun Group had acquired around 16.7 percent of Banco Comercial Português and are planning to increase this to 30 percent.
